Col naso all'insù : some ways to bring the sky into the city and to design urban displays for it

People living in Milan probably feel that they are missing the opportunity to experience the city with the serenity and the calm that sites dominated by nature can provide. But yet Milan hides unexplored and hidden potentials capable of offering these experiences in the built environment. This thesis investigates the possibilities of reviving the connection that the city has enjoyed with the sky since its origins, seeking ways to design with lightness the urban space which acquires new experiential meanings when it tends to the sky. Starting with prehistoric archetypes that demonstrate the great influence of the sky in the development of art and architecture in the past, we arrive at the analysis of the contemporary Milanese sky. The orientation of streets according to astral directions and the search for places that offer unique views of the sky, suggest the development of two overlapping and future-expanding design systems. The first system converts an avenue, a square and a garden into spaces dedicated to the sun, the moon and the sky view, in which time is governed by astronomic events and rhythms related to them. The second system invites the physical and conceptual pursuit of celestial bodies through nomadic and movable installations always oriented toward them. In this already eventful city, new rituals are inserted: the intimate connection between people and the sky will change the way we experience city spaces, bringing a greater awareness of what is present above our heads every day, and inviting us to walk more “with our noses up in the air”.

Chi vive a Milano ha probabilmente la sensazione di non riuscire a vivere la città con la serenità e la calma che i luoghi dominati dalla natura possono trasmettere. Eppure Milano nasconde potenzialità inesplorate e recondite capaci di offrire queste esperienze nell’ambiente costruito. Questa tesi indaga le possibilità di far riaffiorare il legame che la città ha avuto con il cielo sin dalle proprie origini, cercando dei metodi per progettare con leggerezza lo spazio urbano, il quale acquisisce dei nuovi significati esperienziali quando tende verso il cielo. A partire dagli archetipi preistorici che testimoniano la grande influenza del cielo nello sviluppo dell’arte e dell’architettura del passato, si arriva all’analisi del cielo milanese contemporaneo. L’orientamento delle strade secondo direzioni astrali e la ricerca dei luoghi, caratterizzati da viste inedite sul cielo, suggeriscono lo sviluppo di due sistemi progettuali sovrapponibili ed in futura espansione. Il primo sistema converte un viale, una piazza ed un giardino, in spazi dedicati al sole, alla luna e alla visione del cielo, in cui il tempo è governato da eventi astronomici e da ritmi ad esso collegati. Il secondo sistema invita all’inseguimento fisico e concettuale dei corpi celesti, tramite installazioni nomadi e mobili sempre orientate verso di essi. In questa città, già ricca di eventi, si introducono nuovi rituali: il legame intimo tra le persone e il cielo altererà il nostro modo di vivere gli spazi cittadini, rendendoci più consapevoli di ciò che si estende sopra di noi e invitandoci a camminare “col naso all’insù”.
