The thesis studies the evolution of school architecture at primary and secondary levels taking its place in a debate that architects have been engaged in recently, not only on the specific spaces of the school but also in general on the interpretation of a pedagogical program that rightly claims to be innovative, but often wrongly considers the spaces de-puted to implement it rather indifferent to the mandate. The research has therefore started considering the period of the 1960s-1970s (often called “the golden age of school”), with a wide-ranging literature review in particular investigating the architectural journals of that period. The work consists of two distinct and complementary processes: a narrative one (the text of the thesis), which attempted to critically reposition the debate of specific operational experiences (the Italian and the US) around the theme of school architecture; and an iconographic one (the Atlas of Architectures), which finally brings to a critical and selective handbook of typological prototypes. It is precisely from this critical-figurative relocation represented by the Atlas that four fundamental categories have emerged, which, while belonging linguistically to that specific season (the 1960s-1970s), are nowadays to be considered crucial and clarifying concerning the current debate: “Pedagogical key: Programme”; “Construction key: Prefabrication”; “Social key: Civic Centre” and “Technological key: Machine”. Thus, the research has developed an experimentation of prototyping, aimed at demonstrating a certain ductility in the organization of architectural space and contradicting the presumed figurative irrelevance or functional undifferentiation that characterizes a large part of contemporary debate. The challenge, of course, is to not fail to meet the requirements of versatility and adaptability of spaces, which have now become inadmissible, alongside an equally un-questionable typological characterization.
La tesi studia l'evoluzione dell'architettura scolastica nelle scuole primarie e secondarie, inserendosi in un dibattito piuttosto frequentato dagli architetti negli ultimi tempi, non solo sugli spazi specifici della scuola, ma anche in generale sull'interpretazione di un programma pedagogico che vorrebbe a ragione dirsi innovativo, ma che spesso considera gli spazi deputati ad attuarlo piuttosto indifferenti al mandato. La ricerca è quindi iniziata prendendo in considerazione l’arco temporale degli anni '60-'70 (spesso definito “l'età d'oro della scuola”), con un'ampia revisione della letteratura, in particolare investigata attraverso le riviste di architettura di quel periodo. Il lavoro si compone di due fronti distinti e complementari: uno narrativo (il testo della tesi), che ha cercato di ricollocare criticamente il dibattito di specifiche esperienze operative (quella italiana e quella statunitense) intorno al tema dell'architettura scolastica; e uno iconografico (l’Atlante delle Architetture), che alla fine conduce ad un manuale critico e selettivo di “modelli” tipologici. Proprio da questa ricollocazione critico-figurativa rappresentata dall’Atlante sono emerse quattro categorie fondamentali che, pur appartenendo linguisticamente a un preciso periodo del dibattito architettonico (gli anni Sessanta-Settanta), sono da considerarsi cruciali e chiarificatrici rispetto al dibattito attuale: “Chiave pedagogica: Programma”, “Chiave costruttiva: Prefabbricazione”, “Chiave sociale: Centro Civico”, “Chiave tecnologica: Macchina”. La ricerca ha pertanto sviluppato una sperimentazione prototipica capace di dimostrare una certa duttilità nell’organizzazione dello spazio architettonico e di contraddire la presunta irrilevanza figurativa o indifferenziazione tipologica che connotano gran parte del dibattito contemporaneo. La sfida, ovviamente, è anche quella di non venir meno ai requisiti di versatilità e adattabilità degli spazi, ormai irrinunciabili, accanto a una altrettanto indiscutibile caratterizzazione tipologica.
