The project aims to tell the story of the city of Montebelluna through its main historical event: the Palio del Vecchio Mercato. This is an event that takes place every September, during which for five days the city is colored with the drapes of its eleven districts and transformed with music, festivities and leaps into the past to the early 1900s. The event has been held since 1990 to re-enact the ancient route linking Montebelluna’s new and old markets, which once took place on the top of the Mercato Vecchio hill and was later moved to the plain, heralding the birth of modern Montebelluna. The event re-enacts the arduous route that merchants had to take to transport products from the flatland to the top of the hill; the race thus consists of a competition between the athletes of the various quarters, who have to push a cart from the Town Hall to Piazza Colonna in Mercato Vecchio, an uphill route about two kilometers long. In addition to the race, there are other moments highlights such as the historical parade, the election of the damsel, and various nights with guests and DJ sets. The intent is to narrate the territory and its history through the eyes of the districts, each with its own symbols, products, industries, key words, and anecdotes; creating a narrative that hooks the past to the present and helps to raise awareness about the history and traction of an area that is constantly evolving, both communally and geographically. Traditions, in fact, tend to fulfill a mystified narrative of the past, however, by investigating the true history of the territory and the meaning behind the symbols and narratives that are offered to us, we can live more consciously both the tradition and the places in which we live. This is why the project aims to tell the objective historical reality behind the traditions and symbols it uses, so as to combine the celebration of an event with the creation of a greater awareness of the territory to which we feel we belong.

Abstract
This is why the project aims to tell the objective historical reality behind the traditions and symbols it uses, so as to combine the celebration of an event with the creation of a greater awareness of the territory to which we feel we belong.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
