In the context of computational electrophysiology, the EMI (Extracellular-Membrane-Intracellular) model is used to study the electrical behaviour of excitable cells. Its primary advantage lies in its ability to capture local properties of the cell by explicitly representing the extracellular and intracellular spaces, and the cellular membrane. The model consists of a system of partial differential equations (PDE) defined in the intracellular and extracellular spaces, coupled with a system of ordinary differential equations (ODE) defined on the membrane. In this thesis, we introduce the Virtual Element Method (VEM) as a discretization technique for a simplified version of the EMI model. The key distinction from the classical Finite Element Method is that VEM enables the handling of complex meshes composed of general polytopal elements. Two different approaches are proposed for the numerical solution of the problem: the use of splitting schemes, which decouples the model into an ODE step and a PDE step that can be solved separately, and a monolithic approach that aims to discretize and solve the problem simultaneously. For each formulation, numerical experiments and convergence studies are conducted in order to assess the theoretical estimates, ant test the VEM formulation on triangular and polygonal meshes.

Abstract
For each formulation, numerical experiments and convergence studies are conducted in order to assess the theoretical estimates, ant test the VEM formulation on triangular and polygonal meshes.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
