Ricucire : trasformare : ricostruire: un progetto per il centro storico di Greifswald

The project proposal involves an urban-scale intervention in the historic center of a small city in northern Germany: Greifswald. The architectural solutions presented in Europe for these peculiar contexts risk undermining the character of cities as they are often in contrast with the territories and their identities, formed following a long evolutionary path. They ignore the latter in favor of captivating and "globalized" buildings, closer to isolated and openly unique sculptural elements in the urban backdrop. In a territory with building typologies and stylistic features now rooted over the centuries, how is it possible to approach the construction, or rather reconstruction, of a part of the city that is fragmented due to the historical, architectural and socio-cultural processes that it has been involved in? Through a careful analysis of the context and with the help of the principles of Critical Reconstruction theorized in the second half of the last century, the problem can be addressed. The aim is to strengthen the historical identity of Greifswald by tracing the connection that once persisted between the city center and the river through the use of a reconstruction method that is relevant both in local terms and for what concerns the german architectural panorama. It thus becomes possible to restore a unitary and appropriate image for the riverside area, combining the residential setting of the area with the project proposal, while identifying a public dimension of interest to the community. The overall appearance is transformed. The former character and importance are returned to the area, without compromising its identity as a Hanseatic city.

La proposta progettuale prevede un intervento a scala urbana nel centro storico di una piccola città nel nord della Germania: Greifswald. Le soluzioni architettoniche presentate in Europa per questi peculiari contesti rischiano di minare il carattere delle città poiché sono spesso in contrasto con i territori e con le loro identità, formatesi a seguito di un lungo percorso evolutivo. Ignorano queste ultime a favore di edifici accattivanti e "globalizzati", più vicini a elementi scultorei isolati e dichiaratamente unici nella quinta urbana. In un territorio con tipologie edilizie e stilemi ormai radicati nei secoli, in che modo è possibile approcciare la costruzione, o meglio ricostruzione, di una parte di città che risulta frammentata a causa dei processi storici, architettonici e socioculturali che l’hanno coinvolta nello scorso secolo? Attraverso un’attenta analisi del contesto e con l’aiuto dei principi di Ricostruzione Critica teorizzati nella seconda metà dello scorso secolo, il problema può essere affrontato. L’obiettivo è di rafforzare l’identità storica di Greifswald ritracciando la connessione che un tempo persisteva tra il centro cittadino e il fiume tramite l’impiego di una modalità di ricostruzione che sia rilevante sia in termini locali sia per ciò che riguarda il panorama architettonico tedesco. Diventa così possibile restituire un’immagine unitaria e consona all’area del lungo fiume, affiancando all’impostazione residenziale dell’area la proposta progettuale, e individuando al contempo una dimensione pubblica e di interesse per la collettività L’aspetto complessivo risulta trasformato. Vengono restituiti all’area il suo carattere e la sua importanza, senza però comprometterne l’identità di città anseatica.
