Platform Thinking is revolutionizing the way in which companies approach their business. This new paradigm plants its roots in the disruption caused by native platform businesses such as Airbnb and Uber, and later expanded to big tech established firms like Apple. The transversality and accessibility of concepts offered by this business model, however, has progressively allowed companies of every size and across every industry to embrace it. This thesis contributes to the research on the subject by providing a comprehensive study about idle assets that trigger Platform Thinking processes in established, non-platform-native firms. The analysis is carried out on a sample reflecting the companies included in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index at as of February 2023; each firm’s platform initiatives has been listed and reviewed through a case-by-case study based on secondary sources and followed by a further cross-case analysis. Results highlight four main macro-categories of idle assets leveraged by companies for their platform initiatives: Data, Know-How, Relationships, and Physical Assets. The three-step framework proposed by Trabucchi, Sanasi, Ghezzi, and Buganza in their study Idle Asset Hunters—The Secret of Multi-sided Platforms has been expanded and integrated with a deepening on untapped assets that can trigger the virtuous circle described in the paper, by providing an analysis that encompasses their peculiarities, utilization modalities, synergies originating from a combined use, as well as the correlation with the corresponding platform typology, and the sources of said assets, therefore revealing detectable patterns and actionable insights.

Abstract
The three-step framework proposed by Trabucchi, Sanasi, Ghezzi, and Buganza in their study Idle Asset Hunters—The Secret of Multi-sided Platforms has been expanded and integrated with a deepening on untapped assets that can trigger the virtuous circle described in the paper, by providing an analysis that encompasses their peculiarities, utilization modalities, synergies originating from a combined use, as well as the correlation with the corresponding platform typology, and the sources of said assets, therefore revealing detectable patterns and actionable insights.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
