The ongoing extensive integration of digital technologies into the tourism industry workplace has given rise to divergent perspectives. On one hand, some assert that technology implementation serves as a great catalyst, enabling enhanced safety, operational ease, and increased comfort for employees. On the other hand, concerns have surfaced, suggesting that technology adoption may make jobs less satisfying for the workforce, with concerns about job displacement and unemployment. This study aims to delve into the multifaceted and complex factors determining the impact of digital technology implementation on employees’ well-being within the tourism industry. Through a novel human-centered approach, the research categorizes various dimensions of employee welfare to foster a nuanced comprehension of the dynamic interplay between workers and technology. The aim is to empower and optimize "good work" practices in this evolving landscape, ensuring social sustainability for workers, who are a crucial component of the tourism industry. A structured framework is subsequently developed to facilitate the systemic assessment of technology’s impacts across these diverse various dimensions. This framework also functions as a visual representation tool, aiding in better understanding and interpretation of the findings, while also revealing nuanced insights, previously unforeseen, into the socio-technical systems interactions. The framework’s viability and effectiveness are then validated by a focused ethnography study, offering real-world insights into its practical application and utility. In conclusion, this research contributes valuable notions to the “good work” discourse in the tourism industry. By providing managerial insights and practical tools, underpinned by the developed framework, it guides efforts to enhance employee well-being and foster optimal work practices amidst the era of digitalization, to finally present directions for future research.

Abstract
By providing managerial insights and practical tools, underpinned by the developed framework, it guides efforts to enhance employee well-being and foster optimal work practices amidst the era of digitalization, to finally present directions for future research.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
