Nuove manifatture artigianali : un modello innovativo di hub artigianale all'Ex Manifattura Tabacchi di Modena : sviluppare, apprendere, produrre ed esporre: un sistema integrato per sostenere l'artigianato di qualità

Since ancient times, Modena has been a centre for the production and dissemination of high-quality local craftsmanship. Over the years, the practice of Modenese craftsmanship has evolved considerably to include various types of the same. Today, it is possible to say that even the figure of the craftsman himself has changed over time, splitting into two different categories. On the one hand, the figure of the historical and valuable local craftsman remains, operating within his own neighbourhood workshop, a place of repair, production and artistic dissemination. On the other hand, we see the new figure of the craftsman-designer spreading more and more rapidly, i.e. the one who, learning from the past the various production practices of individual products, arrives at the conception of new articles aimed at the field of design. The increasingly frequent lack of spaces for design and work aimed at the figure of the young craftsman designer, combined with the lack of knowledge on the part of many citizens of the phases of artisan production, becomes the theme around which this thesis is built. The lot in which the intervention is located is the Ex Manifattura Tabacchi in Modena, a place that has been in a standstill for years, for most of its spaces, following the restoration work on the building. The aim of the thesis is to design an innovative handicraft hub model, within which not only young designer artisans can have their own place where they can stay, produce and exhibit, but where also visitors interested in the organised activities can learn and try out local handicraft practices. The functional programme therefore unfolds in different spaces of the Ex Manifattura di Modena, such as: five artisan ateliers where it is possible to stay for a certain period of time and design one’s own project; five spaces for individual and/or collective workshops through which it is possible to disseminate, make learn and innovate the different artisan practices; artisan workshops in which designers can put the results of their design to use; collective spaces for permanent artisans; places for sharing and experience for visitors. The various spaces relate to each other thanks to the connection between the various phases of the production processes, ending in the creation of a permanent collection of the artisans’ work produced during the period of their stay. These are displayed in a new exhibition pavilion adjacent to the former industrial space, and are accessible to visitors and citizens alike, allowing everyone to admire and support the fascinating end product of quality craftsmanship.

La città di Modena è, sin dai tempi più antichi, luogo di produzione e divulgazione di alto artigianato locale. Nel corso degli anni, la pratica dell’artigianato modenese si è evoluta notevolmente fino a comprendere varie tipologie dello stesso. Oggi, è possibile affermare che anche la stessa figura dell’artigiano è cambiata nel tempo, arrivando ad una sua scissione in due diverse categorie. Da una parte permane la figura dello storico e prezioso artigiano locale, operante all’interno di una propria bottega di quartiere, luogo di riparazione, produzione e diffusione artistica. Dall’altra, invece, vediamo diffondersi sempre più velocemente la nuova figura dell’artigiano designer, ovvero colui che, apprendendo dal passato le varie pratiche di produzione dei singoli prodotti, arriva all’ideazione di nuovi articoli volti al campo del design. La sempre più frequente mancanza di spazi di progettazione e lavoro rivolti alla figura del giovane artigiano designer, uniti alla non conoscenza da parte di molti cittadini delle fasi di produzione artigiana, diventa il tema intorno al quale si costruisce la tesi. Il lotto nella quale è ubicato l’intervento è l’Ex Manifattura Tabacchi di Modena, luogo da anni in fase di stallo, per la maggior parte degli spazi, successivamente ai lavori di restauro dell’immobile. La tesi si pone l’obiettivo della progettazione di un modello innovativo di hub artigianale, all’interno della quale non solo i giovani artigiani designer possono avere un proprio luogo dove permanere, produrre ed esporre, ma dove anche i visitatori interessati alle attività organizzate hanno la possibilità di apprendere e provare le pratiche di artigianato locale. Il programma funzionale si snoda quindi in diversi spazi dell’Ex Manifattura di Modena, quali: cinque atelier artigiani dove è possibile permanere per un determinato periodo di tempo e ideare il proprio progetto; cinque spazi per workshop individuali e/o collettivi attraverso il quale è possibile divulgare, fare apprendere e innovare le diverse pratiche artigiane; laboratori artigiani nella quale i designer possono mettere a frutto il risultato della loro progettazione; spazi collettivi per artigiani in permanenza; luoghi di condivisione ed esperienza per visitatori. I vari spazi si relazionano tra loro grazie alla connessione tra le varie fasi dei processi produttivi, terminanti nella creazione di una collezione permanente dei lavori artigiani prodotti durante il periodo di permanenza. Questi ultimi, esposti all’interno di un nuovo padiglione espositivo adiacente l’ex spazio industriale, sono accessibili a visitatori e cittadini, permettendo a tutti di poter ammirare e sostenere l’affascinante prodotto finale dell’artigianato di qualità.
