This thesis explores the adaptive reuse of two abandoned buildings located in the Milanese commune of Melegnano: Castello Mediceo di Melegnano, a medieval castle known for its exquisite 16th-century frescoes, and Asilo Trombini, a late 19th-century kindergarten with palace-like features which challenged architectural conventions of the time. These buildings are examples of the multitude of abandoned heritage sites that exist across Italy, which, despite carrying important historical values and legacies, are unfortunately left overlooked and neglected to decay. This issue raises the question, in what ways could new functions be incorporated into cultural heritage to make them relevant for contemporary society? Moreover, recognising the financial aspect as a critical factor in both the problem and in determining their long-term viability, in what ways could management strategies support the economic sustainability of cultural heritage? The questions are addressed through relevant case studies, comparing different design solutions and management strategies. Based on these data, a reuse plan is ultimately proposed for Castello di Melegnano and Asilo Trombini together as a new vibrant cultural hub. Through a contemporary art museum, cultural centre, hostel and senior day centre, the proposal aims to “bridge generations”: 1, Connect the historical building to the modern world, and 2, Create spaces that encourage communities of different ages and backgrounds to connect. On the wider scale, the project aims to strengthen the identity of Melegnano as a town, as well as to set a key example in addressing the prevalent issue of abandoned cultural heritage on a broader scope.

Abstract
On the wider scale, the project aims to strengthen the identity of Melegnano as a town, as well as to set a key example in addressing the prevalent issue of abandoned cultural heritage on a broader scope.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
