This thesis delves deeply into the intricate dynamics of pilgrimage in the culturally rich cities of Mathura-Vrindavan birth place of Lord Krishna, shedding light on the myriad challenges faced by both local residents and pilgrims. Through immersive fieldwork conducted in both urban centers, this study meticulously examines the phenomenon of rapid urban expansion occurring without adequate planning, resulting in various socio-economic and environmental consequences. Central to the investigation is the analysis of the diverse motivations that propel pilgrims to visit these sacred sites and how these motivations influence the interaction among Temple Culture, Social Culture, and Economic Culture. By meticulously documenting observations and engaging with stakeholders, this research identifies a spectrum of factors and actors, each driven by unique motivations, and elucidates their interconnected impact on the fabric of the cities. Moreover, the thesis critically evaluates the existing policy framework governing the development of Mathura-Vrindavan, assessing its efficacy in addressing the challenges posed by urban expansion and pilgrimage influx. In light of these findings, the study proposes comprehensive strategies aimed at fostering sustainable urban growth, preserving cultural heritage, and enhancing the pilgrimage experience. This research not only contributes valuable insights to the academic discourse on pilgrimage studies and urban development it also sheds light on the intricate interplay between cultural heritage preservation and contemporary urban planning practices.
