The theme of underground architecture, the main thread of the present research, is investigated starting from the many meanings that man has always attributed to it. From the earliest examples of cave architecture to the most recent influences in Modern Architecture, the underground world and its attributes are observed in its relations with other disciplines such as art, literature, philosophy and cinema. In order to specifically analyze the relations between “overground” architecture and the underground world, a series of transplants are presented: here, specific themes are exposed each time with the aim of generating visual suggestions, which are essential in order to communicate an idea and trigger novel reasoning. Having observed the similarities between the cave - archetype of underground architecture - and the field of sculpture - in particular the theme of the unfinished - the present research concludes with a design proposal aimed at suggesting a new underground location for Michelangelo’s famous Pieta Rondanini.

Abstract
The theme of underground architecture, the main thread of the present research, is investigated starting from the many meanings that man has always attributed to it. From the earliest examples of cave architecture to the most recent influences in Modern Architecture, the underground world and its attributes are observed in its relations with other disciplines such as art, literature, philosophy and cinema. In order to specifically analyze the relations between “overground” architecture and the underground world, a series of transplants are presented: here, specific themes are exposed each time with the aim of generating visual suggestions, which are essential in order to communicate an idea and trigger novel reasoning. Having observed the similarities between the cave - archetype of underground architecture - and the field of sculpture - in particular the theme of the unfinished - the present research concludes with a design proposal aimed at suggesting a new underground location for Michelangelo’s famous Pieta Rondanini.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
