Plataforma Logistica Zaragoza : investigating a freight village between concepts, descriptions, and scenarios.

This thesis investigates PLAZA, a logistics distribution platform located in the outskirts of Zaragoza, Spain. A freight village that started its operations more than 20 years ago to become the economic project of the region and a transforming agent of the territory with more than 1,300 Ha occupied in the hinterland of Zaragoza. The research aims to analyze from an urban point of view, the effects on the territory, the location of a freight village of the magnitude of PLAZA, in contrast with the local context of a city like Zaragoza. In order to carry out this research, a theoretical framework is constructed in which key concepts are described to be used as a toolbox to understand a freight village in a more complete way. This is complemented with a historical review of PLAZA and the city, where the most relevant events that shaped the trajectory of the platform until today are identified. To this is added an analysis of the different scales in which the platform develops its logistics operations, interacting with various political, economic and social actors. With a consolidated image, the opportunity opens up to explore the possible scenarios that PLAZA could become in the future. These collage-like scenarios seek to broaden the spectrum of the multiple responses that the platform could have in the face of possible events that have already occurred in other geographies. One of the most compelling conclusions of the research process has been to understand that although PLAZA is on a monumental scale, it is embedded in a landscape that is invisible to the eyes of people who live in cities and who take it for granted that everything happens within the city itself. A freight village is a fundamental gear for the development of daily life in a globalized world, which allows us to question whether the academy is really giving importance to these transforming elements of the territory.

Questa tesi analizza PLAZA, una piattaforma di distribuzione logistica situata nella periferia di Saragozza, in Spagna. Un interporto che ha iniziato la sua attività più di 20 anni fa per diventare il progetto economico della regione e un agente di trasformazione del territorio con più di 1.300 ettari occupati nell'hinterland di Saragozza. La ricerca si propone di analizzare da un punto di vista urbanistico gli effetti sul territorio della localizzazione di un interporto della portata di PLAZA, in contrasto con il contesto locale di una città come Saragozza. Per realizzare questa ricerca, viene costruito un quadro teorico in cui vengono descritti i concetti chiave da utilizzare come cassetta degli attrezzi per comprendere in modo più completo un interporto. A ciò si aggiunge una rassegna storica di PLAZA e della città, in cui vengono identificati gli eventi più rilevanti che hanno plasmato la traiettoria della piattaforma fino a oggi. A questo si aggiunge un'analisi delle diverse scale in cui la piattaforma sviluppa le sue operazioni logistiche, interagendo con vari attori politici, economici e sociali. Con un'immagine consolidata, si apre l'opportunità di esplorare i possibili scenari che PLAZA potrebbe diventare in futuro. Questi scenari, simili a collage, cercano di ampliare lo spettro delle molteplici risposte che la piattaforma potrebbe avere di fronte a possibili eventi che si sono già verificati in altre geografie. Una delle conclusioni più convincenti del processo di ricerca è stata quella di capire che, sebbene PLAZA abbia una scala monumentale, è inserito in un paesaggio invisibile agli occhi di chi vive in città e dà per scontato che tutto avvenga all'interno della città stessa. Un interporto è un ingranaggio fondamentale per lo sviluppo della vita quotidiana in un mondo globalizzato, il che ci permette di chiederci se l'accademia stia davvero dando importanza a questi elementi di trasformazione del territorio.
