Re-stimulating urban voids: the historical bazaar of Kemeralti

One of the main drivers that facilitated the growth of Izmir into a commercial and cultural gateway between the east and west, the Kemeralti bazaar nowadays is faced with a variety of challenges. Considering its significance in the urban memory, this thesis studies the Kemeraltı Bazaar with the old Shoe Production District in focus, where abandonment issues are most prominent. With severe deterioration of structures, as well as a loss of its original community leading to significant change in the social landscape, the area presents itself with the need of urgent intervention. Following the research, the project aims to demonstrate a strategy to mend the damaged urban fabric through the utilisation of its own physical voids. The selection of this area considers not only the challenges faced by the bazaar as a whole, but also its negative impact on the city on a grand scale. In addition to physical decay, as an external threat, the popularity of modern shopping centers and the contemporary metropolitan lifestyle contribute to the decline in demand for the bazaar, further jeopardizing its continuity not only as a commercial area, but also as a venue of urban memory. Acknowledging requirements regarding development and adaptability, this research advocates for strategic interventions that preserve Kemeraltı's heritage by ensuring an agile response to the evolving needs and expectations of today's visitors. It is hoped that the project aimed at revitalizing the Old Shoe Production District will serve as a catalyst in increasing the dynamics of the Bazaar as a whole; even extending to the scale of the city. The location being well connected by transportion, surrounded by commercial streets and touristic attractions in addition to a direct connection to the shoreline, support its significant potential for cultural and economic revitalization. However, urgent action needs to be taken- the thesis elaborates on a diversified approach that integrates historical preservation, adaptable reuse, and community participation, presenting a strong opportunity in integrating the city's memory with a contemporary vitality, carrying it into the future for many generations to come.

Uno dei principali motori che hanno facilitato la crescita di Smirne come porta commerciale e culturale tra l'est e l'ovest, il bazar Kemeralti si trova oggi ad affrontare una serie di sfide. Considerando il suo significato nella memoria urbana, questa tesi studia il bazar Kemeraltı concentrandosi sul vecchio distretto di produzione delle calzature, dove i problemi di abbandono sono più evidenti. Con il grave deterioramento delle strutture e la perdita della comunità originaria, che ha portato a un cambiamento significativo nel paesaggio sociale, l'area si presenta con la necessità di un intervento urgente. A seguito della ricerca, il progetto mira a dimostrare una strategia per riparare il tessuto urbano danneggiato attraverso l'utilizzo dei suoi vuoti fisici. La scelta di quest'area tiene conto non solo delle sfide affrontate dal bazar nel suo complesso, ma anche del suo impatto negativo sulla città su larga scala. Oltre al degrado fisico, come minaccia esterna, la popolarità dei moderni centri commerciali e lo stile di vita metropolitano contemporaneo contribuiscono al declino della domanda per il bazar, mettendo ulteriormente a rischio la sua continuità non solo come area commerciale, ma anche come luogo della memoria urbana. Riconoscendo le esigenze di sviluppo e adattabilità, questa ricerca auspica interventi strategici che preservino il patrimonio di Kemeraltı garantendo una risposta agile alle esigenze e alle aspettative in evoluzione dei visitatori di oggi. Si spera che il progetto di rivitalizzazione dell'Antico Distretto Produttivo della Calzatura serva da catalizzatore per aumentare le dinamiche del Bazar nel suo complesso, estendendosi anche alla scala della città. L'ubicazione, ben collegata dai mezzi di trasporto, circondata da vie commerciali e attrazioni turistiche, oltre a un collegamento diretto con la costa, sostiene il suo significativo potenziale di rivitalizzazione culturale ed economica. La tesi elabora un approccio diversificato che integra la conservazione storica, il riuso adattabile e la partecipazione della comunità, offrendo una forte opportunità di integrare la memoria della città con la vitalità contemporanea, portandola nel futuro per molte generazioni a venire.
