Progetto per un nuovo polo universitario a Siracusa

The project lot is located in a suburban area of the city of Syracuse that faces the sea. The purpose of the intervention is to revalorize an area where the casual expansion of industrial facilities has devalued the place, making it a result of space marginalized from the city. The typical features of the place, including the sea and the greenery, are completely ignored. Therefore, in the design we started with a reinterpretation of the values of the area, which led us to consider the area first and foremost as a privileged meeting point between the city and the sea. The lot, so rich and characteristic, leaves room for a project that can serve the city, given its proximity, and, at the same time, give great importance back to the green, enhancing the vast spaces available. In the master plan project, carried out with other groups in the workshop, the entire area is completely rethought, making a radical change in its intended use: the area loses its industrial function to become a cultural and residential area. Through the project this place is revalorized, becoming a function-rich space for the city: university, cultural, sports, and residential buildings are grouped. The project aims to create a new hub for the city of Syracuse, trying to make the most of the potential of the area and its location. Once the basic principles were identified, the entire project area was divided into five lots. In all of them, there is a residential part and a part with a cultural or sports character. Our group designed the westernmost lot, which includes the development of university spaces. We approached the project by investigating some of the most important settlement principles in the history of architecture, to identify which among them were best suited to meet our design needs. The research ended with the identification of two systems: that of the Roman forum for the residential area, and that of the Greek agora for the university area. The latter area was the one we investigated the most. The area contains two bodies containing university classrooms, a library, a small open-air theater, and a viewing tower. The plastic composition of the buildings, following the model of the Greek agora, creates a monumental open space. The relationships between the bodies are established through alignments, and greenery takes on the role of a unifying element within the composition. In the design of the individual buildings, it was essential to compare ourselves with references from well-known architectures that have exemplarily addressed our design issues.

Il lotto di progetto è situato in un’area periferica della città di Siracusa che affaccia sul mare. Lo scopo dell’intervento è quello di rivalorizzare un’area in cui l’espansione casuale di impianti industriali ha svalutato il luogo rendendolo uno spazio di risulta emarginato rispetto alla città. Sono completamente ignorati i caratteri tipici del luogo, tra cui il mare e il verde. Per questo nella progettazione siamo partiti da una rilettura dei valori del territorio, che ci ha portato a considerare l’area innanzitutto come punto privilegiato di incontro tra città e mare. Il lotto, così ricco e caratteristico, lascia spazio ad un progetto che possa essere a servizio della città, data la vicinanza, e, contemporaneamente, che ridia grande importanza al verde, valorizzandone i vasti spazi a disposizione. Nel progetto del masterplan, svolto con altri gruppi del laboratorio, l’intera area viene completamente ripensata, apportando un radicale cambiamento di destinazione d’uso: l’area perde la sua funzione industriale per diventare area culturale e residenziale. Attraverso il progetto questo luogo viene rivalorizzato, diventando uno spazio ricco di funzioni per la città: vengono raggruppati edifici universitari, culturali, sportivi e residenziali. Lo scopo del progetto è quello di creare un nuovo polo per la città di Siracusa, cercando di sfruttare al meglio le potenzialità del territorio e la sua posizione. Una volta individuati, nel masterplan, i principi fondamentali con i quali inserirsi nel territorio, l’intera area di progetto è stata suddivisa in cinque lotti. In tutti è presente una parte residenziale e una parte a carattere culturale o sportivo. Il nostro gruppo ha progettato il lotto più a ovest che prevede lo sviluppo di spazi universitari. Abbiamo affrontato il progetto indagando alcuni dei principi insediativi più importanti nella storia dell’architettura, con l’obiettivo di individuare quali fra questi fossero i più adatti a rispondere alle nostre esigenze progettuali. La ricerca si è conclusa con l’individuazione di due impianti: quello del foro romano per la zona residenziale, e quello dell’agorà greca per la zona universitaria. Quest’ultima zona è stata quella da noi più approfondita. Nell’area sono presenti due corpi contenenti le aule universitarie, una biblioteca, un piccolo teatro all’aperto e una torre panoramica. La composizione plastica degli edifici, seguendo il modello dell’agorà greca, dà vita a uno spazio aperto monumentale. Le relazioni tra i corpi vengono instaurate attraverso allineamenti e il verde assume il ruolo di elemento unificatore all’interno della composizione. Nella progettazione dei singoli edifici è stato per noi fondamentale confrontarci con riferimenti di architetture note che hanno affrontato esemplarmente le nostre stesse questioni progettuali.
