The rapid urbanization of the 21st century has enabled themes of sustainability, accessibility, and inclusivity to be incorporated into new urban design strategies. In this thesis, the applicability of these concepts and the X-Minute City, City of Proximity and Gender Inclusive Urban Planning strategies, mostly designed for developed European cities, is assessed in the Istanbul Gülsuyu neighborhood, characterized by a strong social, political, cultural, and religious structure. The Gülsuyu neighborhood, as a case study, is characterized by features such as low economic status, low literacy rates, especially of female urbanites, strong social ties based on established cultural norms, family structures, and gender roles. Through the analysis of socio-cultural dynamics, security concerns, and urban design problems in the Gülsuyu, this study investigates the movement of vulnerable groups in urban space, the obstacles to their daily life practices and participation in urban life. Methodologically, proximity-time-based accessibility and gender dynamics in the neighborhood were investigated using a mixed-method approach that included on-site observation, stakeholder interviews, spatial analysis, and literature review. The findings emphasize the necessity of creating urban spaces that are inclusive, accessible, equitable, and responsive to gender dynamics. Drawing on gender-inclusive and proximity-based planning, the study redesigns the neighborhood with interventions that will increase access to basic services in access areas within 5- and 10-minute walking distance. This research shows that urban interventions also affect gender equality. Finally, this thesis contributes to ongoing debates about gender-inclusive urbanism and guides policymakers, urban planners, and community stakeholders on how to create more equitable and accessible neighborhoods that prioritize the needs and experiences of all urbanites, especially those disadvantaged by gender inequality. The final proposal presents experiments in sections of the neighborhood to create more equitable and vibrant urban spaces in Gülsuyu by reusing disused buildings, implementing new urbanism strategies, and promoting social inclusion.
