Between the walls: an Archeology Museum in the Città Murata of Como

Situated in the north of Italy and one of the poles of the Lombardia system, the story of Como, whether past, present or future, has been alive since Roman times. The walls, known as Le Mura, are the best and strongest witness of this. They have stated from the ancient time the defensive image of the city, and after the demolishment their ruins remain as an alomost hidden witness in the present. They were shaped, transformed times and times, then with regard to a new era, the walled city and its precinction therefore await a holistic project to enhance their symbolic significance. As a result, this thesis focuses on a contradictory site, located in the garden that attached to the city walls in the south-eastern corner of Como. It is not only a museum project designed for the archeology site of Roman walls undermined in the garden, but also an adaptive reuse proposed for the Torre San Vitale and an improvement proposed for the present public park. Last but not least, the authors intend to organize a new museum system, together with the existing network of museums, the new project and the tower with its wall, in order to activate the corner, to bring this brownfield to life. Given this, this thesis is divided into three sections. Chapters 1 to 3 aim to explain the history and development of Como and the urban rule of its composition that has been correspondingly shaped. The Chapter 1 focuses on the analyses of the urban plan of the city; the Chapter 2 on the role of the modern movement architects in proposing new idea of urban aesthetics into the practices of urban planning and architectural design in Como; and the Chapter 3 on a specific analysis of the contemporary urban grid. Based on the analyses in the first three chapters, we selected few case studies which are presented in the second section, the Chapter 4. Finally in the Chapter 5, through a detailed interpretation of the site, we introduce a suitable approach to the architectural design and the project area. In a summary, the framework of the thesis is such that we hope to explore architectural design in a meaningful historical context.

Como, situata nel nord Italia e uno dei poli del sistema lombardo. La storia di Como è viva fin dall'epoca romana. Le mura, ne sono la maggiore e più forte testimonianza, esse hanno fissato nei tempi antichi l'immagine difensiva della città, e i loro resti, in parte celati, rimangono come testimonianza nel presente. Plasmate e trasformate dal tempo, le mura attendono ancora oggi un progetto organico che ne valorizzi il significato simbolico. La tesi si concentra dunque su un sito contraddittorio, situato nel giardino annesso al Palazzo Giovio e alle mura nell'angolo sud-orientale della città. Non si tratta solo di un progetto museale pensato per il sito archeologico delle mura romane di cui si consercano tracce nel giardino, ma anche di un riuso adattivo proposto per la Torre San Vitale e di un miglioramento proposto per l'attuale parco pubblico. Infine, ma non meno importante, gli autori intendono organizzare un sistema museale inedito, insieme ai musei esistenti, al nuovo progetto e alla torre, al fine di rigenerare e riattivare questa parte della città. La tesi è suddivisa in tre sezioni. I capitoli 1-3 hanno lo scopo di spiegare la storia e lo sviluppo di Como e le regole della composizione urbana della città. Il Capitolo 1 si concentra sull'analisi della cartografia storica; mentre il Capitolo 2 sul ruolo degli architetti del Movimento Moderno nell'introdurre un'estetica urbana moderna nelle pratiche di pianificazione urbana e progettazione architettonica a Como; e il Capitolo 3 si concentra su un'analisi specifica della griglia urbana contemporanea. Sulla base delle analisi dei primi tre capitoli, abbiamo individuato alcuni casi di studio presentati nel Capitolo 4. Infine, nel Capitolo 5, attraverso un'interpretazione dettagliata del sito, abbiamo cercato di individuare un approccio adeguato alla progettazione architettonica in questo sito stratificato. In sintesi, il quadro della tesi è tale da permetterci di esplorare la progettazione architettonica in un contesto storico significativo.
