The Gate: new urban Campus of Unimi

From its inception, Milan has experienced continuous growth and development, particularly in the realms of urban planning and architecture. Over the past few decades, the city has embraced a wide array of international influences, resulting in an intriguing fusion of architectural styles that harmonize with Milan’s classical design heritage. This dynamic interplay between the contemporary and the historical serves as the focal point for our thesis, which centers on a case study—the campus of the Veterinary Department at the University of Milan. Nestled in the vibrant academic hub of Città Studi, this campus is surrounded by a rich tapestry of educational institutions, including the scientific faculties of both the University of Milan (UNIMI) and the Polytechnic University of Milan (Politecnico). Although the urban landscape exudes a sense of classical grandeur, the entire area is undergoing a transformation towards modernization. As reference points, we can draw parallels with the nearby Politecnico area and certain sections of the University of Milan itself. Our project’s primary objective is twofold: firstly, to design a new main entrance for the Veterinary campus, and secondly, to modernize the existing library building. To bridge the gap between the old and the new, we conceived an architectural marvel—a bridge that connects the historic entrance building with a contemporary counterpart. In this endeavor, our intention is not only to create a physical link but also a metaphysical one, symbolizing the profound connection between tradition and innovation.

Fin dalla sua nascita, Milano ha vissuto una crescita e uno sviluppo continui, in particolare nei settori dell’urbanistica e dell’architettura. Negli ultimi decenni, la città ha abbracciato una vasta gamma di influenze internazionali, risultando in una suggestiva fusione di stili architettonici che si armonizzano con l’eredità di design classico di Milano. Questo dinamico intreccio tra il contemporaneo e l’antico costituisce il punto focale della nostra tesi, che si concentra su uno studio di caso: il campus del Dipartimento di Medicina Veterinaria dell’Università di Milano. Incastonato nel vibrante polo accademico di Città Studi, questo campus è circondato da un ricco tessuto di istituti educativi, tra cui le facoltà scientifiche dell’Università di Milano (UNIMI) e del Politecnico di Milano. Sebbene il paesaggio urbano emani un senso di grandiosità classica, l’intera zona sta subendo una trasformazione verso la modernizzazione. Come punti di riferimento, possiamo stabilire dei parallelismi con l’area circostante del Politecnico e alcune sezioni dell’Università di Milano stessa. L’obiettivo principale del nostro progetto è duplice: in primo luogo, progettare un nuovo ingresso principale per il campus veterinario e, in secondo luogo, modernizzare l’edificio della biblioteca esistente. Per colmare il divario tra il vecchio e il nuovo, abbiamo concepito una meraviglia architettonica: un ponte che collega l’edificio d’ingresso storico con un suo contemporaneo. In questo sforzo, la nostra intenzione non è solo quella di creare un collegamento fisico, ma anche uno metafisico, simboleggiando il profondo legame tra tradizione e innovazione.
