Castel Grumello is a 13th century masonry fortification structure located on top of a hill surrounded by vineyards in the Municipality of Montagna in Valtellina, Sondrio, Italy. It is a rare example of a twin castle with the residential quarter in the west and the military quarter in the east. It currently exists in a ruined state similar to the multiple fortification structures across the Valtellina valley due to the destruction by the Grisons of Switzerland in the early 16th century. Castel Grumello is currently owned by the FAI (Fondo per L’Ambiente Italiano) and a prior restoration process had been undertaken by Ar. Stefano Tirinzoni which was completed in 1997. The aim of this master thesis is to provide guidelines of preservation of Castel Grumello and a viable proposal for re-use of the castle. One of the key challenges involved, equipping the castle with a new and viable accessibility route which includes a barrier-free pathway. A detailed study and documentation of the castle were performed following which the current condition of the castle walls was examined through the material and damage analysis. Accordingly, specifications of solutions were detailed out for the same. Although the castle was originally built as a mere fortification structure, it has acquired an identity surrounding wine in the recent past with even a wine being named after the castle. As a celebration of this duality in identity, the castle is proposed to be reused as an open-air wine museum. This museum features spaces such as free-standing pavilions, a wine tasting area, shop, multipurpose room, arena, picnic area. Since this castle is a pivotal point of multiple trekking and cycling routes, it also houses rest areas. This proposal for Castel Grumello is envisioned to rejuvenate the castle with a new function while at the same time retaining its character.

Abstract
This proposal for Castel Grumello is envisioned to rejuvenate the castle with a new function while at the same time retaining its character.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
