EVA: freedom to create your own lighting environment

This thesis presents EVA, an outdoor lamp developed in collaboration with NEMO lighting. It will document the entire creative and research process that led to the realization of this product. EVA is not just another outdoor floor lamp; indeed, from the lamp’s main body, three daughter battery-powered lamps can be detached, offering a new type of interaction between user, light, and main body, a new and, if we may say so, more “natural” interaction. Eva’s main body acts both as a recharging base for the three lamps and as a complementary element, providing a sense of belonging and firmly connecting the fixed part with the three mobile lamps. The lamp’s usage concept emerged from a thorough study of users, spaces, needs, and emerging trends. We are currently in a period of rediscovering outdoor environments, with trends increasingly merging outdoor experiences with domestic ones, both in terms of activities and comfort. The gestures of interaction between the user and EVA are simple and almost innate to humans. Just as one plucks a fruit from a tree, with the same ease, one now controls the light, carrying the “fruit” of this product and illuminating the surrounding environment. The research journey of this thesis, along with the collaboration with NEMO, was able to give life to a human, real, and heartfelt project. This journey has also been enriching for me, exposing me to new realities, design methods, and immersing me in a professional and corporate environment that I had not yet experienced.

Questa tesi presenta EVA, una lampada da esterno sviluppata in collaborazione con NEMO lighting. Verrà documentato l'intero processo creativo e di ricerca che ha portato alla realizzazione di questo prodotto. EVA non è solo un'altra lampada da terra per esterni; infatti, dal corpo principale della lampada, possono essere staccate tre lampade figlie alimentate a batteria, offrendo un nuovo tipo di interazione tra utente, luce e corpo principale, un'interazione nuova e, oserei dire, più "naturale". Il corpo principale di Eva funge sia da base di ricarica per le tre lampade che come elemento completante, fornendo un senso di appartenenza e collegando concettualmente la parte fissa con le tre lampade mobili. Il concetto di utilizzo della lampada è emerso da uno studio approfondito degli utenti, degli spazi, dei bisogni e delle tendenze emergenti. Attualmente ci troviamo in un periodo di riscoperta degli ambienti esterni, con tendenze che sempre più fondono le esperienze all'aperto con quelle domestiche, sia in termini di attività che di comfort. I gesti di interazione tra l'utente ed EVA sono semplici e quasi innati per gli esseri umani. Proprio come si coglie un frutto da un albero, con la stessa facilità, ora si controlla la luce, portando il "frutto" di questo prodotto e illuminando l'ambiente circostante. Il percorso di ricerca di questa tesi, insieme alla collaborazione con NEMO, è riuscito a dare vita a un progetto umano, reale e sincero. Questo viaggio è stato anche arricchente per me, esponendomi a nuove realtà, metodi di progettazione e immergendomi in un ambiente professionale e aziendale che non avevo ancora sperimentato.
