Despite its storied past and architectural grandeur, the Castle of Melegnano, like many of its counterparts across the country, finds itself in a state of neglect, yearning for a new purpose. Currently, the castle serves partially as a museum, open only on weekends, and as a socio-cultural center catering to the needs of the elderly community. While these functions offer a glimpse into its potential, the castle remains significantly underutilized. The thesis embarks on an extensive journey, commencing with an in-depth exploration of the city of Melegnano itself, its historical roots, and its contemporary identity. Central to this exploration is an examination of the intrinsic relationship between art and the city, unraveling the intricate ways in which art intertwines with the fabric of Melegnano's society. The major one being the intricate frescoes in the castle. Moving forward, the study shifts its focus to the physical landscape of Melegnano, meticulously analyzing and mapping various factors and services that contribute to its urban makeup. Through this analysis, it becomes evident that the Castle of Melegnano occupies a pivotal position within the historic city center, alongside other significant landmarks such as public green spaces and the abandoned Trombini kindergarten. These elements collectively form an interconnected entity that holds immense potential for rejuvenation. Zooming in on the site itself, the thesis undertakes a detailed assessment of the castle's physical conditions and its current role within the community. It emerges that the castle plays a vital role in the daily life of Melegnano's residents, serving as more than just a historical artifact but as a living, breathing space that holds cultural significance. Building upon these findings, the thesis proposes a comprehensive plan to transform the entire area surrounding the castle into a vibrant cultural hub that caters to both tourists and the local community. Central to this vision is the concept of 'art in city and city in art,' which aims to celebrate Melegnano's rich cultural heritage while fostering community engagement. The proposed intervention includes the development of a historic trail that weaves through the city center, culminating at the castle, park, and Trombini building. Within the castle, plans involve expanding the museum to showcase art of the castle and the works of Melegnano artists, alongside converting a portion into a strategically positioned hotel considering the context of Lombardy and also to accommodate the anticipated influx of visitors. The rejuvenation of green spaces is envisioned to enhance community well-being, while the Trombini building is earmarked for use as a dynamic venue for children's activities and cultural events. In its concluding stages, the thesis provides a details for the initial phase of the project, focusing on the west wing of the castle, which will be transformed into a hotel. .
