The Middle East's dynamic urban development landscape is characterized by intense competition among cities to enhance their international prominence by erecting massive, tall buildings designed by renowned architects. Nevertheless, this quest for worldwide recognition frequently results in the replication of buildings with a similar appearance throughout various cities, motivated more by human ambition and aspirations than by conventional factors. These massive construction projects are viewed as symbols of advancement and prestige that spur economic development and city revitalization. This thesis employs a comparative analysis of three case studies from Asia—the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and the Jeddah Tower in Jeddah—to explore the mechanisms of mobilization and circulation of master plans, with a special emphasis on supertall buildings. Through an analysis of the urban changes wrought by these iconic buildings, with the aim to comprehend the common goals propelling both their growth and the global architectural narrative within the Gulf region. Data for the case studies have been gathered from a variety of sources, including books, articles, scientific publications, interviews, and scientific publications, using a comparative approach. The study identifies commonalities in urban development tactics, such as a concentration on tourism, economic diversification, and attracting multinational corporations. The participation of renowned design firms and specialists who contribute their expertise to different projects makes these patterns possible. The study points out that although similar knowledge and solutions may be employed, stakeholder dynamics, implementation procedures, and contextual variables all greatly affect the results. The results emphasize the value of approaching urban development holistically rather than simply replicating architectural designs. And the necessity for decision-makers to take into account the larger socioeconomic, cultural, and environmental ramifications of significant undertakings. Although the diffusion of design elements might lead to urban similarities, successful implementation, contextual adaptation, and alignment with larger spatial visions are ultimately critical to success. The thesis offers significant new perspectives on the intricacies of urban change brought about by iconic building projects. It highlights the need for sustainable, inclusive, and contextually aware approaches to city development and asks for a nuanced understanding of the factors influencing urban landscapes. The research aids in the development of lively, resilient, and culturally rich urban environments by bridging the gap between theory and practice.

Abstract
The research aids in the development of lively, resilient, and culturally rich urban environments by bridging the gap between theory and practice.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
