The TOPUS student rocketry group at the University of São Paulo is developing a hybrid rocket engine for a future sounding rocket competition. The engine design, currently in its final phase, incorporates two innovative performance enhancement strategies: swirl injection of nitrous oxide (N2O) and the use of paraffin as a fuel. CFD analyses were conducted separately on the injector and combustion chamber to simulate the three-dimensional swirl flow within the injector, assess the effect of swirl injection on combustion in a two-dimensional domain, and obtain promising results in terms of pressure and thrust increase compared to axial injection. A parametric analysis was also performed to model the liquid paraffin layer on the fuel grain surface. The information obtained from the CFD analyses provides crucial support for the optimization of the hybrid engine design in preparation for the sounding rocket competition.

Abstract
The information obtained from the CFD analyses provides crucial support for the optimization of the hybrid engine design in preparation for the sounding rocket competition.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
