With more-than-human eyes: the role of design in fostering empathy towards nature

The current Era we are living in could be defined by groundbreaking innovations on one side and climatic and ecosystem crisis on the other. As humans, we have shaped the world and the environment as if it was only ours to live in, without fully grasping the consequences of our actions. Now, these consequences are becoming more and more inevitable to evade and it is critical to move away from the anthropocentric beliefs that brought us here and shape a new way of thinking to improve our coexistence also with non-human entities with which we share this world. Empathy has always been a powerful tool for creating human-centered design solutions, to tackle and bring to the light different societal issues like gentrification, gender and racial inequality to include and give voice to the people left out from the design process. Now the Design discipline has a new challenge, that is to involve in the thinking the often neglected rest of the non-human world without whom our existence would be impossible. Therefore, the goal of this thesis is to explore ways in which empathy can be used in the Design discipline in order to reconnect us - humans - to nature through a more-than-human approach that ultimately leads to a shift of perspective towards a more ethical and respectful future for all livings and non-livings entities. This thesis combines a literature review from a multidisciplinary perspective, with the aim of exploring the motivations that lie behind our drifting away from nature and to define the gap where, as designers, we can intervene. Finally, the thesis proposes, through a case studies analysis, an empathy framework to support and guide future interventions. And finally, start to see the world through "more-than-human eyes".

L’era in cui viviamo potrebbe essere definita da innovazioni rivoluzionarie da un lato e da crisi climatiche ed ecosistemiche dall’altro. Come esseri umani, abbiamo plasmato il mondo e l’ambiente come se fosse solo nostro, senza comprendere appieno le conseguenze delle nostre azioni. Ora, queste conseguenze stanno diventando sempre più inevitabili da eludere ed è fondamentale abbandonare le convinzioni antropocentriche che ci hanno portato qui e plasmare un nuovo modo di pensare per migliorare la nostra coesistenza anche con le entità non umane con cui condividiamo questo mondo. L’empatia è sempre stata uno strumento potente per creare soluzioni progettuali incentrate sull’uomo, per affrontare e portare alla luce diverse problematiche sociali come la gentrificazione, la disuguaglianza di genere e razziale, per includere e dare voce alle persone escluse dal processo di progettazione. Ora la disciplina del design ha una nuova sfida, che è quella di coinvolgere nel pensiero il resto del mondo non umano, spesso trascurato, senza il quale la nostra esistenza sarebbe impossibile. Pertanto, l’obiettivo di questa tesi è quello di esplorare i modi in cui l’empatia può essere utilizzata nella disciplina del design al fine di riconnettere noi - esseri umani - alla natura attraverso un approccio più che umano che, in ultima analisi, porta a un cambiamento di prospettiva verso un futuro più etico e rispettoso per tutte le entità viventi e non viventi. Questa tesi combina una revisione della letteratura da una prospettiva multidisciplinare, con l’obiettivo di esplorare le motivazioni che stanno alla base del nostro allontanamento dalla natura e di definire il divario in cui, come designer, possiamo intervenire. Infine, la tesi propone, attraverso l’analisi di casi di studio, un quadro di riferimento sull’empatia per sostenere e guidare futuri interventi. E finalmente iniziare a vedere il mondo con occhi "più che umani".
