La Stazione ticino

This thesis project deals with the Swiss government station located in the Bellinzona valley, in the Magadino plain, intended as a stop on the extension of the AlpTransit railway network, allowing for quick connections between Switzerland, Germany, and Italy. This new infrastructure is intended to become a gateway to the canton of Ticino, named La Stazione Ticino, the Ticino station. The arrival of this station will have a significant impact on the entire canton, marking a new stage in its urban and territorial development. The attractiveness represented by the station will generate intense land pressure, requiring careful organization in a project at the valley scale. Furthermore, the project is situated in a region where a deep thought has emerged on architecture and territory through architects such as Luigi Snozzi, Aurelio Galfetti, Livio Vacchini, Mario Botta, and Flora Rutchat. Faced with an anarchic proliferation of construction creating an urban continuum from the "Duomo di Milan to the Alps," which Aurelio Galfetti named the "Città-Ticino," they attempted to produce architecture capable of recreating centralities, hierarchizing voids, and expressing theoretical approach through the project: producing architecture of resistance. This project for the new station aspires to become a new fragment of the city and a major piece of this "City-Ticino." It seemed interesting, as a thesis work, to revisit this theme of the Stazione Ticino, designed in the 1990s, and confront it with current issues. How to create a piece of city that interacts with the territory while integrating this recent history of architecture? To accompany this work, I wrote a thesis in which I tried to understand how a linear building, such as a viaduct, can be integrated at the scale of the territory, based on two examples: the University of Calabria by Vittorio Gregotti and the baths of Bellinzona realized by Flora Rutchat, Aurelio Galfetti, and Ivo Trumpy. Through the analysis of this latter building, I was able to approach the Ticino territory and understand some of the challenges that cross this region.

Questo progetto di tesi riguarda la Stazione del governo svizzero situata nella valle di Bellinzona, nella pianura del Magadino, prevista come fermata dell'estensione della rete ferroviaria AlpTransit, che consente di collegare rapidamente la Svizzera alla Germania e all'Italia. Questa nuova infrastruttura è destinata a diventare un punto di accesso al cantone Ticino, chiamato La Stazione Ticino . L'arrivo di questa stazione avrà un impatto significativo sull'intero cantone, segnando una nuova fase nello sviluppo urbano e territoriale. L'attrattiva rappresentata dalla stazione genererà una forte pressione sul suolo, richiedendo un'organizzazione attenta in un progetto a scala della valle. Inoltre, il progetto si inserisce in una regione dove è emerso un pensiero profondo sull'architettura e sul territorio attraverso architetti come Luigi Snozzi, Aurelio Galfetti, Livio Vacchini, Mario Botta e Flora Rutchat. Di fronte a una proliferazione anarchica della costruzione che ha creato un continuo urbano che va dal "Duomo di Milano alle Alpi", chiamato da Aurelio Galfetti la "Città-Ticino", hanno cercato di produrre un'architettura in grado di ricreare centralità, di gerarchizzare gli spazi vuoti, di far trasparire l'approccio teorico attraverso il progetto: produrre un'architettura di resistenza. Questo progetto della nuova stazione aspira a diventare un nuovo frammento di città e un elemento chiave di questa "Città-Ticino". È sembrato interessante, come lavoro di tesi, riesaminare questa tematica della Stazione Ticino, progettata negli anni '90, e confrontarla con le questioni attuali. Come creare un pezzo di città che dialoghi con il territorio integrando al contempo questa storia recente dell'architettura? Per accompagnare questo lavoro, ho redatto una tesi in cui cercavo di capire come un edificio lineare, come un viadotto, possa inserirsi a scala del territorio, basandomi su due esempi: l'Università della Calabria di Vittorio Gregotti e i bagni di Bellinzona realizzati da Flora Rutchat, Aurelio Galfetti e Ivo Trumpy. Attraverso l'analisi di quest'ultimo edificio, ho potuto avvicinarmi al territorio ticinese e comprendere parte delle sfide che attraversano questa regione.
