Preseving the urban memory: recalling the historical port city of Izmir

Located in the westernmost part of Turkey, Izmir has been one of the world’s important port cities since ancient times due to its natural harbor feature, mild climate conditions, geopolitical location, and geographical features. This master’s thesis primarily addresses the multifaceted urban problems facing Izmir, focusing particularly on the lack of awareness and neglect of historical and cultural heritage, and the subsequent loss of urban memory over time. Additionally, the thesis investigates the decrease in social and public green spaces in the historical city center due to unchecked urbanization. The research identifies these issues as byproducts of the city’s unplanned development trajectory and administrative decisions. The thesis adopts a comprehensive approach to illuminate the pervasive lack of awareness and recognition of Izmir’s rich cultural heritage, which not only directly affects locals but also hinders the city’s necessary tourist appeal. Through a comprehensive analysis of historical records, urban planning documents, maps, and interviews with local stakeholders, the research aims to develop methods to highlight the importance of Izmir’s rich cultural heritage. At the heart of the discussion lies the neglect of Izmir’s (Smyrna’s) historical assets dating back to prehistoric times, which adversely affects the city’s identity. Additionally, the thesis has included research on the vital importance of communal spaces for the well-being of citizens by examining the impact of urbanization on social and green areas. Based on the findings, the thesis proposes a series of strategic interventions aimed at redefining the identity of the historic port city Izmir, reminding its inhabitants of this identity, and valorizing its cultural heritage. These interventions include policy recommendations, community engagement initiatives, and revitalization projects aimed at fostering a renewed appreciation for Izmir’s historical heritage and increasing its livability quotient.

Situated nella parte più occidentale della Turchia, Izmir è stata una delle importanti città portuali del mondo sin dai tempi antichi grazie alla sua caratteristica di porto naturale, alle condizioni climatiche miti, alla posizione geopolitica e alle caratteristiche geografiche. Questa tesi di laurea affronta principalmente i molteplici problemi urbani che affliggono Izmir, concentrandosi in particolare sulla mancanza di consapevolezza e negligenza del patrimonio storico e culturale e sulla conseguente perdita di memoria urbana nel tempo. Inoltre, la tesi indaga sulla diminuzione degli spazi sociali e pubblici verdi nel centro storico della città a causa dell’urbanizzazione incontrollata. La ricerca identifica questi problemi come prodotti del percorso di sviluppo non pianificato della città e delle decisioni amministrative. La tesi adotta un approccio esaustivo per illuminare la diffusa mancanza di consapevolezza e riconoscimento del ricco patrimonio culturale di Izmir, che non solo influenza direttamente i residenti locali ma ostacola anche l’attrattiva turistica necessaria della città. Attraverso un’analisi completa di documenti storici, documenti di pianificazione urbana, mappe e interviste con gli interessati locali, la ricerca mira a sviluppare metodi per evidenziare l’importanza del ricco patrimonio culturale di Izmir. Al centro della discussione sta la negligenza dei beni storici di Izmir (Smyrna) risalenti ai tempi preistorici, che influisce negativamente sull’identità della città. Inoltre, la tesi ha incluso ricerche sull’importanza vitale degli spazi comuni per il benessere dei cittadini, esaminando l’impatto dell’urbanizzazione sulle aree sociali e verdi. Sulla base dei risultati, la tesi propone una serie di interventi strategici mirati a ridefinire l’identità della storica città portuale di Izmir, ricordando ai suoi abitanti questa identità e valorizzando il suo patrimonio culturale. Questi interventi includono raccomandazioni politiche, iniziative di coinvolgimento della comunità e progetti di rivitalizzazione volti a promuovere una rinnovata apprezzamento per il patrimonio storico di Izmir e ad aumentare il suo indice di vivibilità.
