No land: a contemporary utopian study

Utopias are fantasies of a better future in a new, alternative order. The main purpose of this thesis is to analyze the evolution of utopian thought over the last century and to test how a 21st century utopia can respond to our contemporary issues such as migration. The aim of the first part of the thesis is to delve deep into the concept of utopia and its past and present meaning, to reveal the potential risks utopias can fall into when producing fantastical realities for humankind, to examine important examples from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s, and to try to understand the possible transformation utopias have undergone in the last century. The second part of the study aims to illustrate the extreme need for rapid architectural interventions in emergencies and highlights key examples from the last few decades. After these theoretical studies, the last chapter of the thesis is dedicated to the design of “No Land”, a contemporary utopian study, that aims to implement and exercise the results of the initial learnings of this thesis. “No Land” imagines an “Island of Hope” where people can live freely without any restrictions. The island wishes to honor the memory of refugees who lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea while trying to migrate to a different continent with new dreams and wants to symbolize their journey of hope.

Le utopie sono fantasie di un futuro migliore in un nuovo ordine alternativo. Lo scopo principale di questa tesi è quello di analizzare l’evoluzione del pensiero utopico nel corso dell’ultimo secolo e di verificare come un’utopia del XXI secolo possa rispondere alle problematiche contemporanee come la migrazione. L’obiettivo della prima parte della tesi è quello di approfondire il concetto di utopia e il suo significato passato e presente, di rivelare i potenziali rischi in cui possono cadere le utopie quando producono realtà fantastiche per l’umanità, di esaminare esempi importanti degli anni Cinquanta, Sessanta e Settanta e di cercare di capire la possibile trasformazione che le utopie hanno subito nell’ultimo secolo. La seconda parte dello studio mira a illustrare l’estrema necessità di interventi architettonici rapidi nelle emergenze e mette in luce esempi chiave degli ultimi decenni. Dopo questi studi teorici, l’ultimo capitolo della tesi è dedicato alla progettazione di “No Land”, uno studio utopico contemporaneo, che mira a implementare ed esercitare i risultati degli apprendimenti iniziali di questa tesi. “No Land” immagina un’”Isola della speranza” dove le persone possono vivere liberamente senza alcuna restrizione. L’isola vuole onorare la memoria dei rifugiati che hanno perso la vita nel Mar Mediterraneo mentre cercavano di migrare verso un altro continente con nuovi sogni e vuole simboleggiare il loro viaggio di speranza.
