This thesis aims to analyse and support the monitoring of the state of health in paediatric patients (between 5 and 11 years of age), with a specific focus on the onset of common symptoms, but in an emergency situation. The critical phase is concentrated in the first few hours, in which parents risk overestimating or underestimating the seriousness of the situation, resorting unjustifiably to the emergency room. Parents find themselves having to manage their children’s health without having adequate preparation or practical tools to monitor and manage their care properly and, in the absence of support from known health professionals (e.g. when travelling, at weekends or at night), they experience it as an emergency. The proposed solution is the development of a system-product composed of a kit with analog devices and a digital application to support the parent in monitoring the health status of the young patient. The solution is designed to be easy to use, even in stressful situations, and provides clear and precise indications on the correct practices to follow in the first hours after the onset of disease symptoms. The kit allows both symptom analysis and constant monitoring of the patient’s essential parameters to ensure a safe observation period and to collect data that can be used for a complete diagnosis by the pediatrician, should his or her intervention be necessary. The work focused on analysing the needs of parents in such situations, also considering the not always appropriate use of common medicines available at home or easily accessible. In addition, best practices in paediatric safety and monitoring were explored, involving health professionals to ensure a comprehensive and reliable approach. The aim is to make a contribution to the field of paediatric care by proposing a solution that can be easily adopted by parents, thus improving the safety and effectiveness of care at critical times for children’s health.
