Objectives The main objective of this project is to address the wounds left by the rapid growth our cities have faced over the last 100 years. Istanbul, as the center of different civilizations has always faced the incremental growth of its population but after the establishment of the republic and the industrialization of the country, Istanbul has become the main hub for people from all over the country and the world. This has required the urgent development of an infrastructure able to house greats amount of people in a very short time. Which has left deep wounds in the fabric of the city that now as we enter a new era of urban development is our duty to address and to heal as best as possible taking into consideration factors neglected in the past. Research approach Using as a reference Koolhaas’ premise for the competition for the Ville Nouvelle Plan for Melun-Senart in France: “… If the built is now out of control - subject to permanent political, financial, cultural turmoil - the same is not (yet) true of the unbuilt; nothingness may be the last subject of plausible certainties” The project proposes a set of voids (bands) that will be the core of the intervention. The residues left by the voids (islands) will be left for development by different architects, different entities and different styles, but those will have to comply with that proposed in the bands and its subsequent centralities. Centralities are the key areas of intervention identified after a thorough analysis of the area and the bands, these respond to the particularities of its corresponding location, the centralities act as gates to the project and for this to be possible, it‘s necessary to break the island created by the surrounding highway and roads. At the core of every proposal is an ecological approach, the goal is to improve the quality of the public spaces and to provide much needed green spaces, for this, nature based solutions are the guideline of the intervention. Finally one centrality is chosen to develop more in depth, moving from the urban scale to the architectural scale. Conclusions we must address the issue that is our industrial heritage, this huge spaces that have gone to decay could prove to be the propellers of a much needed change in the way we think our cities. this project aims to offer a different approach to the re thinking of this kinds of infrastructures, putting nature and the public at the center. It is our duty to address these huge wounds that Modernity left us in order to reconnect them to the urban fabric of the city. We must change the paradigm and leave aside the servitude towards the car and design cities for people.
