In Guinea Bissau 75% of the population lives in small villages scattered throughout the territory. The Cacine sector, in the extreme south of the country, is one of the most disadvantaged areas: among the nine villages that stand on the coasts of the Rio of the same name, it is the one with the largest extension but has just 2000 inhabitants. Its rural nature, combined with the poverty of the population, causes a series of problems, first of all the lack of a water network which forces the inhabitants to build wells to recover drinking water and the absence of a sewerage system which favors the spread of epidemics.

Abstract
In Guinea Bissau 75% of the population lives in small villages scattered throughout the territory. The Cacine sector, in the extreme south of the country, is one of the most disadvantaged areas: among the nine villages that stand on the coasts of the Rio of the same name, it is the one with the largest extension but has just 2000 inhabitants. Its rural nature, combined with the poverty of the population, causes a series of problems, first of all the lack of a water network which forces the inhabitants to build wells to recover drinking water and the absence of a sewerage system which favors the spread of epidemics. Knowing the reality of this land was the first step to better understand what the needs of the place were. The thesis project was born from the collaboration with the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, whose primary need consisted in the creation of a residence that could host them during the period spent in the village. “Hora Tchiga” which translated from the Creole language means “the time had come to change” reflects the desire of the Oblate Fathers to contribute to the improvement of the living conditions of this community: it is about building “places for people” in which to develop spaces of meeting and relationship as well as residence. It is precisely with the desire to follow this wave of change that the project of the small multifunctional center was born which aims to preserve the identity of the place, interacting with the surrounding reality but at the same time introducing something "innovative". In an attempt to create a bridge between tradition and innovation, a building was designed that preserves the typical characteristics of local buildings but reinterprets their construction techniques by introducing new materials, although always acting with a view to construction simplicity. Propose and design something that was truly feasible in this context, implementing sustainable and concrete choices that can also serve as a "school" for the inhabitants of Cacine; a desire that guided the entire project, naturally defining the volumes, the architectural and structural choices and the technological strategies. The intervention, which aims to be an opportunity for rebirth and development, addresses issues such as the use of passive strategies necessary to guarantee the comfort of internal environments in a tropical monsoon climate, the recovery and reuse of rainwater and the treatment of organic waste.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
