The river park remediation project : the post industrial revival of Ex Mira Lanza through landscape

The River Park focuses on reimagining the Ex Mira Lanza factory area, one of the abandoned sites in the Portuense district of Rome. The initial factory started as ‘colle e concimi’, later merged with Mira Lanza had several expansions over the years. After its closure in 1952, it was undertaken by the Rome Municipality witnessing periods of abandonment and project proposals that never entered the executive phase.As an exception,the Indian theatre redefined some of the abandoned structures and activated it after the remediation of the site. The proposed intervention comes at the end of the recent activities, which contributed to the current condition of inaccessibility and abandonment of the area as well as unauthorized use of the abandoned buildings. The project proposes the design of a multifunctional urban park, based on the reclamation of the place and the role of the area in the urban context and its need to be revived after years of abandonment before it is destroyed. Understanding its proximity to the River Tiber and many other sites under consideration (the Gazometer, Mercati Generali, The Slaughterhouse, etc) which have historical importance as well as value in the present urban context, the new park highlights the relationship between these and also its revival on a natural basis. The project aimed at supporting the preservation of existing trees and the scars in the site to develop as potential hotspots for urban biodiversity.Over the years, it as a public park introducing more recreational activities to the park after its nature-based revival. The areas are allotted as bigger plots to develop further in the future. Merging the historical remains with the landscape helps underline the history of the site and provides a platform for education as well. Regarding the selection of plant species, three main criteria are followed: historical-cultural, ornamental, and technical-functional, supporting at the same time phytoremediation functions. A final underlying focus at the park acts as a green connection from the main road (Via Guglielmo Marconi) connecting to the south Rome and the Tiber riverside thus activating the riverside as well. The long-term vision is to remediate the area naturally along with opening it to the people, looking towards the environmental challenges of the present and future generations.

Il Parco Fluviale punta a ripensare l'area industriale Ex Mira Lanza, uno dei siti dismessi del quartiere Portuense di Roma. Lo stabilimento iniziale nato come “colle e concimi”, successivamente fuso con Mira Lanza ha avuto nel corso degli anni diversi ampliamenti. Dopo la chiusura nel 1952, venne rilevato dal Comune di Roma,con successivi assistendo periodi di abbandono e proposte progettuali mai entrate nella fase esecutiva. Eccezionalmente,l’Indian Theater ha redefinito alcune delle strutture abbandonate e le ha attivate dopo che il sito era stato sgomberato.L'intervento proposto si pone al termine delle recenti attività, che hanno contribuito all'attuale condizione di inaccessibilità e abbandono dell'area nonché di utilizzo non autorizzato degli edifici abbandonati. Il progetto propone la progettazione di un parco urbano multifunzionale, basato sul recupero del luogo e sul ruolo dell'area nel contesto urbano e sulla sua necessità di rinascere dopo anni di abbandono prima di essere distrutta. Comprendendo la sua vicinanza al fiume Tevere e a molti altri siti presi in considerazione (il Gazometro, i Mercati Generali, il Mattatoio, ecc.) che hanno importanza storica oltre che valore nell'attuale contesto urbano, il nuovo parco evidenzia il rapporto tra questi e anche la sua rinascita su base naturale. Il progetto mira a sostenere la conservazione degli alberi esistenti e delle cicatrici nel sito per svilupparli come potenziali punti nevralgici per la biodiversità urbana. Nel corso degli anni, è diventato un parco pubblico con li introducione di attività ricreative nel parco dopo la sua rinascita basata sulla natura. Le aree vengono disegnate come lotti più grandi per svilupparsi ulteriormente in futuro. L’unione dei resti storici con il paesaggio aiuta a sottolineare la storia del sito e fornisce anche una piattaforma educativa. Per quanto riguarda la selezione delle specie vegetali vengono seguiti tre criteri principali: storico-culturale, ornamentale e tecnico-funzionale, supportando al tempo stesso le funzioni di fitorimedio. Verso il fione è previsto un nuovo collegamento verde dalla strada principale (Via Guglielmo Marconi) che collega Roma sud e il lungotevere, attivando così anche il lungofiume. La visione a lungo termine è quella di bonificare l’area in modo naturale e di aprirla alla gente, guardando alle sfide ambientali delle generazioni presenti e future.
