In the current context of energy transition and growing environmental awareness, Renewable Energy Communities (RECs) within the European Union are of crucial importance. These communities, leveraging renewable energy sources and innovative technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), contribute to the creation of sustainable and resilient entities within Smart Cities. The main objective of this thesis is to investigate the state of the art of RECs in the European Union, and then focusing on the technologies used and the achievable environmental, social and economic benefits. To achieve this objective, a literature analysis was initially conducted to acquire the necessary knowledge on the topic of RECs. Subsequently, a census based on secondary sources was conducted, developing a database to collect a wide range of information on various European RECs. A framework was developed to classify these communities according to their technological configurations and the resultant benefits they generate, and a matrix was created that intersects the technological level of RECs with their main purpose, identifying nine areas representing different types of communities. The results of this research contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the current state of RECs in the European Union and the benefits derived from the application of technologies in these communities.

Abstract
The results of this research contribute to a comprehensive understanding of the current state of RECs in the European Union and the benefits derived from the application of technologies in these communities.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
