Amidst the global push towards achieving net zero emissions to combat climate change, many companies have publicized their commitment to this goal. However, the lack of stringent regulation and transparency has led to increased “greenwashing” practices, where firms claim to support environmental sustainability without meaningful action. The term “net zero greenwashing projects” describes efforts that claim environmental benefits but may primarily serve business interests, highlighting the need for more transparency and genuine commitment to sustainability. However, the existing literature fails to provide a clear definition. This research critically examines the phenomenon of net zero greenwashing projects, focusing on their definitions, key characteristics, and the strategic motivations behind their deployment by companies. Through the development of a comprehensive taxonomy and the analysis of multiple case studies, this research describes the essence of net zero greenwashing projects, distinguishing them based on their sell type, scope matching, level of greenwashing, and the nature of their greenwashing characteristics. The results revealed two prevalent patterns summarizing typical strategies and their reasoning, divided between the benefits and opportunities companies seek through greenwashing. Companies leverage these projects as a means of reputation management rather than genuine environmental stewardship, thereby shifting the responsibility of environmental sustainability away from corporate actions to consumer choices and exaggerated technological solutions. The conclusion emphasizes that combating greenwashing requires systemic change, increased public awareness, and stringent consequences to deter companies from these practices and encourage a genuine transition to clean energy. This research lays essential groundwork for a better understanding of greenwashing and guides the necessary policy and corporate practice changes.

Abstract
This research lays essential groundwork for a better understanding of greenwashing and guides the necessary policy and corporate practice changes.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
