Secret Garden : a regeneration project for San Cristoforo convent

This paper describes how the design of a historical city such as Mantova, Italy, can be made to better fit the characteristics of the site. The content mainly includes the research and study of Mantova's urban background information, the exploration and analysis of Mantova's gardens, the research of the design site San Cristoforo convent, the study of other architectural cases, and the deduction of the final proposal. In the process of understanding the context of the city, the authors carried out an extensive literature review, and gained a better understanding of Mantova through the writings of scholars. Instead, the way of recognising and learning about Mantova's gardens was practice-based. Through the Interno Verde, the authors visited and observed more than forty gardens in the centre of the city, creating a unique experience and providing much inspiration for the final design. Prior to the design, the author visited San Cristoforo convent several times to investigate the site. The main focus was on the different height levels within the site, the state of abandonment of the convent and church, and the survival of the gardens. At the same time, three case studies were carried out, focusing on the relationship with the city, the choice of materials and the interaction within the site. Finally, after several rounds of design and modification, a programme adapted to the site was gradually generated. The theme of the proposal is "Secret Garden", which connects the east and west sides of the site through the book market, and at the same time connects the four gardens inside the site. The design respects the original occupants of the building, and has transformed the interior of the building whilst creating new functions, including a book market, coffee, leisure, youth hostel and exhibition. We hope that the design will arouse the curiosity of the city's inhabitants to enter through an unassuming door and delight in exploration and discovery. Questo lavoro descrive come il progetto di una città storica come Mantova, in Italia, possa essere reso più adatto alle caratteristiche del sito. Il contenuto comprende principalmente la ricerca e lo studio delle informazioni sul contesto urbano di Mantova, l'esplorazione e l'analisi dei giardini di Mantova, la ricerca del sito di progettazione del convento di San Cristoforo, lo studio di altri casi architettonici e la deduzione della proposta finale. Nel processo di comprensione del contesto della città, gli autori hanno effettuato un'ampia revisione della letteratura e hanno acquisito una migliore comprensione di Mantova attraverso gli scritti degli studiosi. Il modo di riconoscere e conoscere i giardini mantovani è stato invece basato sulla pratica. Attraverso l'Interno Verde, gli autori hanno visitato e osservato più di quaranta giardini nel centro della città, creando un'esperienza unica e fornendo molta ispirazione per il progetto finale. Prima della progettazione, l'autore ha visitato più volte il convento di San Cristoforo per studiare il sito. L'attenzione si è concentrata soprattutto sui diversi livelli di altezza all'interno del sito, sullo stato di abbandono del convento e della chiesa e sulla sopravvivenza dei giardini. Allo stesso tempo, sono stati condotti tre studi di caso, incentrati sul rapporto con la città, sulla scelta dei materiali e sull'interazione all'interno del sito. Infine, dopo diverse fasi di progettazione e modifica, è stato gradualmente generato un programma adatto al sito. Il tema della proposta è "Secret Garden", che collega i lati est e ovest del sito attraverso il mercato del libro, e allo stesso tempo collega i quattro giardini all'interno del sito. Il progetto rispetta gli occupanti originari dell'edificio e ne ha trasformato l'interno creando nuove funzioni, tra cui un mercato del libro, un caffè, un luogo di svago, un ostello della gioventù e una mostra. Ci auguriamo che il progetto susciti la curiosità degli abitanti della città, che potranno entrare da una porta senza pretese e godere dell'esplorazione e della scoperta. Come il temperamento della città, si nasconde dietro una fitta nebbia, rendendo impossibile resistere all'esplorazione dei dettagli.
