Hadrian's Villa was the tomb of journeys, [...] Each stone represented the singular conglomeration of a will, a memory, sometimes a challenge. Each building stood on the plan of a dream. These are the words that Marguerite Yourcenar chooses to use in her celebrated novel to talk about the suburban residence that the emperor Hadrian had built for himself in the hills of Tivoli. Perhaps it took someone who was a writer by profession - and not an architect - to express so concisely the grandeur of such a place. The man, as well as the place, was also out of the ordinary. Described as a cultured emperor with many interests in different cultural fields, a lover of Hellenism, Hadrian travelled extensively during his reign, finding and celebrating beauty in every corner of his vast empire. Beauty, the dream of beauty, however, did not die with Hadrian any more than it was born with him. It has pervaded mankind in every age, becoming real in the most diverse forms, embodied, among others, in theatre and fashion. Theatre comes from a Greek word, ϑεάομαι, which means to observe, to be a spectator. The object of the gaze is an invention that transforms reality by imitating life, life that - according to Shakespeare - is basically nothing more than a big stage. Fashion, on the other hand, makes the dream part of reality by dressing the actors on the stages of the streets. Fashion, like theatre, transforms reality, fashion too is in a certain sense a creator of illusion [...] the fashion designer dresses dreams and everyday life, the costume designer dresses fiction, fantasy creatures, sometimes myths. (Giorgio Streheler) With this in mind, the aim of this project is the temporary staging of a fashion event at Villa Adriana. The maison of reference is Versace, chosen for the important commitment of the founding designer in the theatrical field. Over the years, Gianni Versace has designed costumes for numerous theatrical performances, part of which will find an exhibition space within the project. During the event, planned to last a few weeks, there will therefore be a four-stage exhibition at the archaeological site that will end with the actual fashion event consisting of the runway show.
