This thesis project develops its work in Latvia, more precisely in Riga. From a principle of necessity, it generates the need to reconfigure a portion of park Bastejkalna which represents a threshold in the morphological aspects of the city. Where the historical city ends and the twentieth-century city re-emerges, where the walls of the past drew the insurmountable boundaries between nature and the built environment, where now an indelible furrow remembers the limit, a system of volumes is established in an attempt to mend the fabric between city and memory, the limit that includes. A geometry that imposes itself as a new portal, almost a rampart, going to inhabit the margin by reconstructing that portion of the city. Thus was born the project for the new philharmonic of the Latvian capital, settling between the natural edge of the urban and built fabric. The design practice is preceded by an in-depth theoretical study. At the beginning of the thesis work, the forms of the city, the result of a succession of stratifications, were understood and studied, becoming an interpretative key in the reading of the place through the elaboration of a well-defined design strategy. Subsequently, the formal and typological characteristics of the spectacle building and the cornerstones of Riga’s architecture were examined, analysing the aggregative principles that characterise it. The characteristics of the threshold within the city were also analysed, leading to the idea of the built boundary as the settlement principle of the project, the inhabited wall becoming its compositional logic and the void the aggregative element.
Il progetto di tesi sviluppa il proprio lavoro in Lettonia, più precisamente a Riga. Da un principio di necessità, si genera il bisogno di riconfigurare una porzione del parco Bastejkalna il quale rappresenta negli aspetti morfologici della città una soglia. Dove la città storica finisce e quella novecentesca riemerge, dove le mura del passato disegnavano i confini, invalicabili, tra natura e costruito, dove ora un solco indelebile ricorda il limite, un sistema di volumi si instaura nel tentativo di ricucire il tessuto tra città e memoria, il limite che include. Una geometria che si impone come un nuovo portale, quasi una bastione, andando ad abitare il margine ricostruendo quella porzione di città. Nasce così il progetto per la nuova filarmonica della capitale lettone, andando ad insediarsi tra margine naturale del tessuto urbano ed edificato. La pratica progettuale è preceduta da un approfondimento teorico. All’inizio del lavoro di tesi sono state comprese e studiate le forme della città, esito di un susseguirsi di stratificazioni, divenute chiave interpretativa nella lettura del luogo attraverso l’elaborazione di una strategia progettuale ben definita. Inseguito sono state esaminate le caratteristiche formali e tipologiche dell’edificio dello spettacolo e dei capisaldi dell’architettura di Riga, andando a analizzare i principi aggregativi che lo connotano. Sono stati analizzati inoltre i caratteri della soglia all’interno delle città, fino ad arrivare all’idea di limite costruito come principio insediativo del progetto, il muro abitato ne diventa la logica compositiva e il vuoto l’elemento aggregativo.
