Eyescape engine : the Grottoes of Catullus theatre

The project of the theater within the northern forefront of the “Grottoes of Catullus” aims to marry the ancient grandeur of the archaeological site with the vibrancy of contemporary performing arts. The choice to use wood as construction material was guided by the desire to respect the surrounding environment and impart a natural and inviting aesthetic to the theater, harmoniously blending tradition and modernity. The arrangement of the stalls was meticulously planned to address current issues in visitor experience, creating an ideal connection between the various levels of the domus and providing linearity to the museum route. The clean and modern lines of the architectural design seamlessly marry with the ancient ruins, creating an intriguing blend of past and present. The intervention opens to the opportunity to reconstruct the ancient belvedere terrace, guided by a precise study of the arrangement of the Roman structures. Following the alignments and proportions provided by the ruins, a structural grid of 17,50 x 12,50 meters was created, characterized by imposing wooden pillars that seamlessly integrate with the ancient remains. Additionally, the terrace recreates the northern perimeter of the ancient garden, delineating the olive grove that envelops the “Grottoes of Catullus”. This reconstruction not only enriches the visitor experience but also contributes to the preservation and valorization of the site as an important archaeological and cultural resource. Providing a panoramic viewpoint and a tangible connection to the past, the terrace becomes a central element in the narrative and experience of the domus. The new structures serves as an EyeScape Engine on the landscape and the ruins of the “Grottoes of Catullus”, significantly elevating the visitor experience and establishing a new profound connection with the site. In this way, it not only enriches the tourist experience of the “Grottoes” but also transforms the area into a vibrant center of social and cultural life for the population of Sirmione.

Le "Grotte di Catullo", situate pittorescamente sulle rive del Lago di Garda costituiscono un prezioso gioiello paesaggistico. L’uliveto che si estende sui terreni una volta occupati dalla domus romana aggiunge un tocco di selvatico fascino, mentre il riflesso scintillante delle acque del lago conferisce al panorama una suggestiva aura di serenità e mistero. La testimonianza della grandezza degli antichi romani e la bellezza naturale incontaminata generano un un ambiente in cui storia e paesaggio si fondono in un’armonia senza tempo. La scelta di utilizzare il legno come materiale da costruzione è stata guidata dal desiderio di rispettare l’ambiente circostante e di conferire un’estetica naturale e accogliente al teatro, fondendo armoniosamente tradizione e modernità. La disposizione della platea è stata attentamente pianificata per risolvere gli attuali problemi di fruizione, creando un collegamento ideale tra i vari livelli della domus e conferendo linearità al percorso museale. Le linee pulite e moderne del design architettonico si sposano in modo fluido con le antiche rovine, creando un interessante connubio tra passato e presente. L'intervento apre all’opportunità di ricostruire l’antica terrazza belvedere, guidata da uno studio accurato della disposizione delle sostruzioni romane. Utilizzando gli allineamenti e le proporzioni fornite dalle rovine come guida, si è creato una griglia strutturale di 17,50 x 12,50 metri, caratterizzata da imponenti pilastri in legno che si integrano senza conflitti con i resti antichi. La terrazza ricrea inoltre il perimetro settentrionale dell’antico giardino, delimitando l’uliveto che avvolge le “Grotte di Catullo”. Questa ricostruzione arricchisce non solo l’esperienza dei visitatori, ma anche la conservazione e la valorizzazione del sito come importante risorsa archeologica e culturale. Fornendo un punto di vista panoramico e un legame tangibile con il passato, la terrazza diventa un elemento centrale nella narrazione e nell’esperienza della domus.
