"Scaling" refers to the process of spreading excellence within a growing enterprise. Recently, interest in literature in distinguishing concepts of "high growth" from those of "scaling," and how to discern the two, has become increasingly strong. Nevertheless, there seems to be little interest in understanding how and why firms do "scaling." Bridging this academic gap, this study investigates the scaling of Italian startups over a 10-year period, from 2012 to 2022, under varying degrees of development in the Italian ecosystem, using a qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) methodology. Starting from a definition of scaling that explicitly considers the relevance of the factor of scale, the study aims to identify key configurations of conditions that contribute and do not contribute to scaling. The key role of platforms emerges, insufficient on their own to contribute to proper scaling, but necessary when combined with other key value-drivers, such as both the academic and professional experience of the founders, or the adoption of low-cost strategies. The analysis aims to offer relevant implications not only for theory, but also for policy makers and practitioners who every day try to support the scaling of the Italian entrepreneurial ecosystem

Abstract
The analysis aims to offer relevant implications not only for theory, but also for policy makers and practitioners who every day try to support the scaling of the Italian entrepreneurial ecosystemFile | Dimensione | Formato | |
