This thesis aims to explore through a personal point of view the theme of spatial leftovers, called with the name of "Avanzi". Those places are characterized by the losing of their original function and are in a state of abandonment. The first part of the research consists, therefore, into an introduction on the theme of Avanzi, with a focus on the Italian situation. An interpretation key to the theme is then presented on the relationship between Avanzi and the context of reference, from which a personal interpretative hypothesis comes to life. This is manifested through two conceptual images: that of the sponge, as opposed to that of the shield, in Italian: "spugna" and "scudo". Indeed, there are certain types of Avanzi that, despite no longer performing their original function, maintain a vitality of their own, becoming the theatre of new flows and relationships. These are spaces that, with the passage of time, fill with lifeblood and grow, just as a sponge can do. In fact, this type of space is classified under the name "Avanzi spugna", because of its ability to absorb and feed on the surrounding context. At the same time, another type of Avanzi is identified that, although they too continue to "survive," are relegated to a dimension exempt from any vital flow. These are the "Avanzi scudo", or that typology of spaces that remain in a state of forgetfulness, subsequent to abandonment, being disconnected from the context. Spaces, therefore, that close themselves like impenetrable shields, making any kind of interaction with them unusable. Following the cataloguing of several case studies of Avanzi interpreted in this logic, the part devoted to the meta-project is developed. Starting from the characteristics of the two types of Avanzi, some guidelines are outlined for working in the rehabilitation of these spaces. The metaproject proposes a general approach to be taken in relation to this world, and then outlines guidelines to be adopted based on the characteristics of the Avanzi spugna and Avanzi scudo. The thesis ends with an appendix reporting some dialogues undertaken with three architects, who explore and elaborate some of the themes in the research.

Abstract
The thesis ends with an appendix reporting some dialogues undertaken with three architects, who explore and elaborate some of the themes in the research.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
