Twenty years ago, in the book "Landscape and Architecture in Contemporary Italy," Giovanni Durbiano and Matteo Robiglio posed a question: is there a way of understanding the landscape shared by the architectural culture of the late 20th century that periodically reappears like a karst river? To answer this question, the present work focuses on the production of Vittoriano Viganò, a prominent figure in 20th-century Milanese architecture who, however, long maintained a peripheral position in official histories. The work of the Milanese architect stands out not only for its precise and linear aesthetics, widely associated with rationalism or industrial brutalism, but also for its ability to create a harmonious dialogue between man, architecture, and nature. The landscape has changed today, and in recent years, we have witnessed a rediscovery of Viganò's work. The thesis follows in the footsteps of this rediscovery, delving into the study of a work, Ca’ della Vigna, not simply unfinished, but rewritten and replaced by an ordinary and austere single-family home. The villa is an eloquent example of Viganò's attention to the synergistic integration between the built environment and the natural surroundings. The architecture, the subject of analysis in this study, is distinguished not only for its design solutions and the themes emerging from its study but also for the dramatic nature of its history. It retraces the events that led to the understanding of what the house is today, serving as a way to question the survival of the signs deposited on the ground, on the work, even at the social level of the architect, who becomes a spokesperson and guide in the relationship between the built environment and the landscape. The thesis is divided into 6 parts, in a research guided by a case study, Ca' della Vigna, as an architectural element no longer visible today located in the rural landscape surrounding the city of Voghera. Starting with an overview of what was, the life, the formation, and the poetics of the Milanese architect, the study aims, in addition to providing a clear interpretation of the vanished architecture, to observe how formal and compositional solutions of the built element can synergize with the natural geometric rules that characterize the structure and composition of the landscape. Carefully delving into various aspects of Viganò's design thinking and his works, the study will examine the constructive poetics of the Milanese architect, his cultural and historical context, and the comparison with his other architectures in order to bring out distinctive traits and a clear approach due to his dedication to the landscape as a cornerstone of his work. The villa is an eloquent example of Viganò's attention to the synergistic integration between the built environment and the natural surroundings. The objective of this work is to narrate, through an architectural story, what ambitions have been projected onto the Italian landscape during the 20th century and how cases like the one analyzed have been illustrative of a relationship between man and nature that is still not mature. This project aims to embark on a journey through the works of Vittoriano Viganò, focusing particularly on his unique approach to the design process and landscape architecture. The research will be guided by an emblematic case study: the country villa Ca' della Vigna, an architectural element no longer visible today located in the rural landscape surrounding the city of Voghera. This villa impresses not only for its compositional refinement but also serves as a poignant example of Viganò's attention to the synergistic integration between built environment and natural surroundings. Throughout this endeavor, various aspects of Viganò's design thinking and his works will be carefully explored. The study will analyze the architect's constructive poetics, his cultural and historical context, and compare his works to elucidate distinctive traits and a clear approach stemming from his dedication to landscape as a central element of the project. A distinctive feature of the architectural work under examination is its intrinsic connection with the surrounding environment, thus attention will be focused on analyzing the history of the rural Pavese territory, the vineyard landscape structure, to contextualize Viganò's work within the historical and cultural framework of the time. The study aims not only to provide a clear interpretation of the architecture but also to observe how formal and compositional solutions of the built element can synergize with the natural geometric rules characterizing the structure and composition of the landscape.

Abstract
Twenty years ago, in the book "Landscape and Architecture in Contemporary Italy," Giovanni Durbiano and Matteo Robiglio posed a question: is there a way of understanding the landscape shared by the architectural culture of the late 20th century that periodically reappears like a karst river? To answer this question, the present work focuses on the production of Vittoriano Viganò, a prominent figure in 20th-century Milanese architecture who, however, long maintained a peripheral position in official histories.
