It all starts with a map : a toolkit to facilitate subjective mapping processes for a user-based approach to research and regenerate marginal places

This thesis explores subjective mapping as a tool to understand places from the point of view of the people inhabiting it, concentrating on a specific socio-geographical context: rural and marginal places in Italy. Subjective mapping is increasingly used as a tool to better understand the lived experience of places, and involve citizens in the transformation of spaces. This transdisciplinary method has emerged at the intersection of urban design, anthropology, geography and art, with research-action projects exploring its different facets and applications. By investigating the role of mapping as a process which mediates our experience of space and place, the map is understood as a complex socio-cultural artefact which reflects the values and beliefs of the context it was produced in. The socially embedded nature of mapping and maps is what makes it an interesting tool to use for the design of services, as individuals, their interactions, relationships and experiences is one of the focuses of the discipline. The defining characteristics and issues that emerged from a situated research in this context frames the design approach, suggesting that subjective mapping can be a powerful tool to create connections and new narratives for marginal places. As a proposal, a subjective mapping toolkit was designed to enable individuals to carry out collaborative mapping processes, adhering to the idea that by approaching territories through their inhabitants (present and future, permanent and temporary) can depict the richness and potential of places, as well as, lead to future transformations that take into account the inhabitants of a place .

Questa tesi esplora la mappatura soggettiva come strumento per comprendere i luoghi dal punto di vista delle persone che li abitano, concentrandosi su uno specifico contesto socio-geografico: i luoghi rurali e marginali in Italia. La mappatura soggettiva è sempre più utilizzata come strumento per comprendere meglio l’esperienza vissuta dei luoghi e coinvolgere i cittadini nella trasformazione degli spazi. Questo metodo transdisciplinare è emerso all’intersezione tra progettazione urbana, antropologia, geografia e arte, con progetti di ricerca-azione che ne esplorano le diverse sfaccettature e applicazioni. Indagando il ruolo della mappatura come processo che media la nostra esperienza dello spazio e del luogo, la mappa viene intesa come un complesso artefatto socio-culturale che riflette i valori e le convinzioni del contesto in cui è stata prodotta. La natura socialmente incorporata della cartografia e delle mappe è ciò che la rende uno strumento interessante da utilizzare per la progettazione di servizi, poiché gli individui, le loro interazioni, relazioni ed esperienze sono uno dei punti focali della disciplina. Le caratteristiche e le questioni che sono emerse da una ricerca situata in questo contesto inquadrano l’approccio progettuale, suggerendo che la mappatura soggettiva può essere un potente strumento per creare connessioni e nuove narrazioni per i luoghi marginali. Come proposta, è stato progettato un kit di strumenti di mappatura soggettiva per consentire agli individui di svolgere processi di mappatura collaborativa, aderendo all’idea che l’approccio ai territori attraverso i loro abitanti (presenti e futuri, permanenti e temporanei) possa rappresentare la ricchezza e il potenziale dei luoghi, nonché portare a trasformazioni future che tengano conto degli abitanti di un luogo.
