This thesis study is outlined from a clearly defined design question: how to lead a small or medium-sized enterprise (SME) operating in the contract furniture sector towards a sustainable transition. This challenge led to the conception of an innovative design consultancy service called STAIRS, developed and delivered by a design studio specialising in the sector. The conception of STAIRS was the result of rigorous research work, which highlighted the need for companies to adopt innovative approaches to address the environmental and social challenges of the 21st century, as well as to remain competitive in an increasingly globalised market geared towards sustainable values. This consultancy service aims to be a strategic ally for SMEs in the contract furniture sector, guiding them through a gradual process of transformation towards sustainability. The STAIRS framework is designed as a series of progressive steps, aimed at supporting the company throughout the transition. These steps include the in-depth analysis of current business practices and market dynamics, the identification of strategic opportunities for the integration of sustainable practices, and the definition of measurable and realistic goals to guide the company towards a new sustainability-oriented business vision. Through the simulation of interactions and exchanges between the design studio and the client SME, it is possible to draw a detailed picture of the activities involved in this transformation process. From the initial analysis and planning phase to the final implementation and monitoring phase, STAIRS aims to be a reliable and competent partner for SMEs wishing to embrace sustainability as a core element of their business strategy. In conclusion, this thesis project represents a significant contribution to the development of innovative and sustainable approaches in the contract furniture sector. In fact, a special focus was given to a practical analysis, imagining the interaction between the design studio and the SME requesting the consultancy. Through this project, crucial issues related to occupational well-being and sustainable innovation were explored, providing a new approach to business management and a new product-service system designed to have an impact on society and the environment.
