Una guida impossibile di San Vittore: un racconto sulla città-carcere

The thesis research aims to report through a multidisciplinary, scientific and ethnographic approach, the functioning of the San Vittore prison in Milan. The metaphor of the urban fabric was used to analyse the penitentiary institution to be understood as a city, with its venues, its dynamics and its inhabitants, that is to say all the subjects who for some reason pass within its walls. The rays form the neighbourhoods, the floors of the rays its buildings, the cells its flats. The reference to urban imagery allowed the adoption of a more accessible narrative style, using language that moves between the ironic and the fictional, typical of explorers' guidebooks. The study follows two intersecting lines of research: on the one hand, a theoretical, desk-based investigation, analysing scientific data, institutional regulations and collective imaginaries on the subject in discussion; on the other hand, an active, participatory research on the site, based on personal interaction with the spaces and individuals of the city of San Vittore. In this way, it turns out to be a project with many and many hands. The guide reports information collected in the format of a travel diary and attempts to give a voice to an institution which struggles to open up. The project is also translated on public ground through the construction of a series of installations inspired by the interior architecture. They are doors that act as an urban and collective megaphone, with the intention of revealing and demystifying this gigantic social remove.

Questa tesi racconta attraverso un approccio multidisciplinare, scientifico ed auto-etnografico, il funzionamento della Casa Circondariale di San Vittore di Milano. La metafora del tessuto urbano è stata utilizzata per analizzare l’istituto penitenziario da intendersi come una città, con i suoi luoghi, le sue dinamiche e i suoi abitanti, ovvero tutti i soggetti che per qualche motivo transitano dentro le sue mura. I raggi formano i quartieri, i piani dei raggi i suoi palazzi, le celle gli appartamenti. Il richiamo all’immaginario urbano ha consentito l’adozione di uno stile narrativo più accessibile, utilizzando un linguaggio che si muove tra l'ironico e il romanzato, tipico dei manuali per esploratori. Lo studio segue due linee di ricerca che si intersecano: da un lato un’indagine teorica, da scrivania, che analizza dati scientifici, regolamenti istituzionali e immaginari collettivi sul tema in questione; dall’altro una ricerca attiva e partecipata sul territorio, che si fonda sull’interazione personale con gli spazi e gli individui della città di San Vittore. In tal modo, la co-progettazione diventa uno strumento chiave della ricerca. La guida riporta informazioni raccolte sotto forma di diario di bordo e tenta di dare voce a un’istituzione che fatica ad aprirsi. Il progetto si traduce anche sul suolo pubblico tramite la costruzione di una serie di installazioni ispirate alle architetture interne. Sono porte manifesto che agiscono da megafono urbano e collettivo, con l’intento di svelare e demistificare questo gigantesco rimosso sociale.
