Nuovo Forum: an exploration into the classical orders of architecture to project the new Città della Scienza in the Flaminio District of Rome

This thesis project originates as an architectural proposal in response to the initiative of the Comune di Rome to create a new urban space dedicated to the management, preservation and exhibition of scientific information and materials that constitute Italy's cultural heritage. This initiative was structured as a public Architecture competition that began in late 2022 and was integrated with the ongoing urban transformation process that has been taking place in the Flaminio neighborhood, particularly since the early years of the 20th century. This process involves the restoration of the Electronic and Precision Materials Military Plant, a building of significant historical value that is currently in a partially abandoned state but holds a great historical and spatial potential to house the new headquarters of the Museo della Scienza di Roma. The project is proposed as a formal link between the city's ongoing transformational process and the longstanding historical-cultural identity of the Flaminio community. The objective of this study is to analyze in depth each of the archaeologic y historic layers that are main part of the past of this urban system, with the goal of determining the true patrimonial value of a site, which sometimes appears to be overlooked due to the dynamism of the urban and social evolution processes that have established the Flaminio neighborhood as one of the main sites of territorial and urban experimentation in Rome.

Questo progetto di tesi nasce come proposta architettonica in risposta all'iniziativa del Comune di Roma di creare un nuovo spazio urbano dedicato alla gestione, conservazione ed esposizione delle informazioni e dei materiali scientifici che costituiscono il patrimonio culturale italiano. Questa iniziativa si è strutturata come un concorso pubblico di Architettura che ha avuto inizio alla fine del 2022 e si è integrata nel processo di trasformazione urbana in corso nel quartiere Flaminio, in particolare a partire dai primi anni del XX secolo. Questo intervento prevede il recupero dello Stabilimento Militare di Materiali Elettronici e di Precisione, un edificio di notevole valore storico che attualmente si trova in uno stato parzialmente abbandonato ma che racchiude in sé un grande potenziale storico e spaziale per ospitare la nuova sede del Museo della Scienza di Roma. Il progetto si propone come collegamento formale tra il processo di trasformazione in atto nella città e la storica identità storico-culturale della comunità Flaminia. L'obiettivo di questo studio è quello di analizzare in profondità ciascuno degli strati archeologici e storici che costituiscono la parte principale del passato di questo sistema urbano, con l'obiettivo di determinare il vero valore patrimoniale di un sito, che a volte appare trascurato a causa della il dinamismo dei processi di evoluzione urbana e sociale che hanno consacrato il quartiere Flaminio come uno dei principali luoghi di sperimentazione territoriale e urbanistica di Roma.
