The purpose of this master’s thesis is to show how high-rise buildings can represent a conscious and sensitive response to an ever-changing world. The Paseo de la Castellana is the road axis in Madrid that has been the scene of most experimentation in architecture over the years. It is no coincidence that most of the buildings over 70 metres high have been designed along it. Plaza de Colon represents the meeting point of the city’s main arteries (Castellana-Recoletos on the North-South axis, Calle Genova-Calle Goya on the East-West axis), from which streets branch off to each neighbourhood. For this reason, the strategic location of the plot offers an opportunity to respond to a spatial need in the city. The building becomes the key to improving an already existing system. The aim is also to demonstrate how architectural design starts from its structural definition. That (as Campo Baeza has repeatedly said) defines the order of space. It is interesting to see, in fact, how once the structure is built, there is almost everything, the essence of the building must already be perfectly clear and recognisable. This principle can be identified as the basis of all those architectures that have been able to survive the passage of time. These buildings have been renewed in their ephemeral components, determined by the evolution of technology, but have remained unchanged in their structural and spatial articulation. A question then arises: can a building respond precisely to a specific need of the part of the city in which it is inserted while finding in its composition a universal character? Specificity and universality represent an oxymoron that must underpin architectural design. It is in the simplicity of the means of the architect’s response to the place that these two concepts can find a connection. The way in which this becomes possible, and the reason why projects as distant in time as they are in place can be found that speak the same language, lies in the conception of human-scale design, i.e. starting from the study of the needs of those who will use the space. The thesis proposes to combine a historical research of cultural references with a design proposal that is as specific and generous towards the city as it is capable of surviving over time and modifying itself, one day, when demand will have changed, defining a new paradigm of sustainability.

Abstract
The thesis proposes to combine a historical research of cultural references with a design proposal that is as specific and generous towards the city as it is capable of surviving over time and modifying itself, one day, when demand will have changed, defining a new paradigm of sustainability.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
