Urban stitching: regeneration of Porta Genova

The aim of the thesis is to provide recommendations for the regeneration of fragile spaces that emerge in the process of urban expansion. These fragile spaces are usually underutilized land, or decaying urban areas, and they are often the result of changes in patterns of urban growth and productivity, forcing cities to transform and reorganize their living spaces based on new principles and new development logics. These underutilized spaces provide an excellent opportunity to rethink the function of the territory. Milan provides the ideal context: an exemplary historical city expanding on different historical footprints, where railway yards have interacted with the urban fabric and shaped its layout, defining axes of expansion, guiding transformations, but also establishing new limits and boundaries. Porta Genova, as one of the railway yards, is inserted between two different urban structures, ending near the historical center of the city. The invasion of linear spaces can be seen as a long limitation. For this unique area, we propose a strategy of urban stitching: Firstly, tracing the history, using the memory as a resource for future development; Secondly interaction, activating the relationship with the city, and finally integration, to reach a sustainable future. And three nodes are selected as activation nodes, representing the stitching of built-up space, connected space and open space. At the same time the renewed linear place will be part of Milan's green system, redefining the city's public space in a sustainable way by combining it with the Navigli's important water resources, creating a positive relationship between the past, the present and the future.

L'obiettivo della tesi è fornire raccomandazioni per la rigenerazione degli spazi fragili che emergono nel processo di espansione urbana. Questi spazi fragili sono solitamente terreni sottoutilizzati o aree urbane in degrado e sono spesso il risultato di cambiamenti nei modelli di crescita e produttività urbana, che costringono le città a trasformare e riorganizzare i loro spazi di vita sulla base di nuovi principi e nuove logiche di sviluppo. Questi spazi sottoutilizzati rappresentano un'ottima opportunità per ripensare la funzione del territorio. Milano fornisce il contesto ideale: una città storica esemplare che si espande su diverse impronte storiche, dove gli scali ferroviari hanno interagito con il tessuto urbano e ne hanno plasmato l'assetto, definendo assi di espansione, guidando le trasformazioni, ma anche stabilendo nuovi limiti e confini. Porta Genova, come uno degli scali ferroviari, si inserisce tra due diverse strutture urbane, terminando in prossimità del centro storico della città. L'invasione di spazi lineari può essere vista come una lunga limitazione. Per quest'area unica, proponiamo una strategia di ricucitura urbana: in primo luogo, tracciare la storia, utilizzando la memoria come risorsa per lo sviluppo futuro; in secondo luogo l'interazione, attivando il rapporto con la città, e infine l'integrazione, per raggiungere un futuro sostenibile. Come nodi di attivazione sono stati scelti tre nodi che rappresentano la cucitura tra spazio edificato, spazio connesso e spazio aperto. Allo stesso tempo, il rinnovato luogo lineare sarà parte del sistema verde di Milano, ridefinendo lo spazio pubblico della città in modo sostenibile, combinandolo con le importanti risorse idriche dei Navigli, creando una relazione positiva tra passato, presente e futuro.
