Tra comics e manga : analisi e differenze tra fumetti occidentali e giapponesi nei confronti del pubblico femminile

Arbitrarily, the birth of comics dates back to the end of the 18th century in the USA. They were meant to be a communication tool for the masses. In Japan, at the same time, the manga was born also as a tool of communication and entertainment. Over the course of history, the two media developed differently, both in terms of the graphic and the narrative aspect. This paper aims to compare and study the otherness between Western and Eastern comics focusing on those dedicated to adolescent female audience. They allow to investigate, indeed, more interesting communicative aspects than other genres. Some disting graphic characteristics are studied, from a semiotic view, such as drawing style, representation of faces and bodies, layout, narrative techniques, settings and recurring themes. The analysis will be concentrating on the two main genres, romantic comics and shōjo manga. Throughout the comparison between two important comic works, namely The roses of Versailles and Wonder Woman, the reader will be provided with the tools for understanding the language of comics. Moreover, the foundations deal with the last part of the elaborate, that concern hybrid works. In this context, the production for girls had a fundamental role, originated from the last twenty years from the merger of comics and manga. By analysing the latest trends, the reader is finally offered a look at the possible future of comics and the evolution of its visual language.

La nascita del fumetto risale, arbitrariamente, alla fine del 1800 negli USA come strumento di comunicazione per le masse. Nello stesso periodo, in Giappone, nasce il manga, anch’esso come mezzo di comunicazione e intrattenimento per il popolo. I due media nel corso della storia si sono sviluppati in maniera differente, sia per quanto riguarda l’aspetto grafico che narrativo. L’ elaborato si pone come obiettivo il confronto e lo studio dell’alterità tra fumetto occidentale e orientale nell’ottica della produzione dedicata ad un pubblico adolescente femminile, poiché permette di indagare su aspetti comunicativi particolarmente interessanti rispetto alle altre pubblicazioni. Approfondendo alcuni generi, come fumetti romantici, adolescenziali e shōjo manga, si studiano, dal punto di vista semiotico, alcune caratteristiche grafiche, come stile di disegno, rappresentazione di volto e corpi, impaginazione, e caratteristiche narrative, come tecniche, ambientazioni e tematiche ricorrenti. Attraverso il confronto tra due opere di rilievo, ovvero Le Rose di Versailles e Wonder Woman, si forniscono al lettore gli strumenti per la comprensione del linguaggio del fumetto e vengono poste le basi per affrontare l’ultima parte dell’elaborato, ovvero le opere ibride, nate dall’incontro e dalla fusione del fumetto e del manga negli ultimi vent’anni, dove la produzione per ragazze ha avuto un ruolo fondamentale. Approfondendo le ultime tendenze nate tra Est e Ovest, viene infine proposto al lettore uno sguardo sul possibile futuro del fumetto e sull’evoluzione del suo linguaggio visuale.
