Design models for archaeological heritage: development of an integrated, multiscalar and architectural tool for Italian archaeological UNESCO heritage located in fragile sites

The research defines new solutions for the valorisation of heritage, moving from an approach based mainly on conservation, to a more active one. In particular, the research answers two critical aspects related to the UNESCO orbit: firstly, the current tools for safeguard and valorisation don’t include actual architectural projects on heritage; secondly, some heritage can significantly suffer this absence of a design attitude. These sites are identified as the archeological areas located in fragile sites. With the intention to design solutions that understand the specificities of the sites, but which shall also be useful to many sites, the research identifies three profiles of fragile territorial contexts and archaeological areas. The final output, the Design Model, is obtained thanks to the in-depth study of each profile, which is conducted through a pair of UNESCO sites, one used as Case Study and the other as a Sandbox. The research ends with a first applied test on one of the studied UNESCO sites to confirm the validity of the methodology and guide further thinking on the subject.

La ricerca definisce nuove soluzioni per la valorizzazione del patrimonio, passando da un approccio basato principalmente sulla conservazione a uno più attivo. In particolare, la ricerca risponde a due aspetti critici legati all'orbita UNESCO: in primo luogo, gli attuali strumenti di salvaguardia e valorizzazione non includono progetti architettonici veri e propri sul patrimonio; in secondo luogo, alcuni beni possono soffrire in modo significativo di questa assenza di approccio progettuale. Questi siti sono identificati come aree archeologiche situate in siti fragili. Con l'intento di progettare soluzioni che comprendano le specificità dei siti, ma che siano anche utili a molti siti, la ricerca identifica tre profili di contesti territoriali e aree archeologiche fragili. L'output finale, il Design Model, è ottenuto grazie allo studio approfondito di ciascun profilo, condotto attraverso una coppia di siti UNESCO, uno utilizzato come Caso Studio e l'altro come Sandbox. La ricerca si conclude con un primo test applicato a uno dei siti UNESCO studiati per confermare la validità della metodologia e guidare ulteriori riflessioni sul tema.
