Fashion industry has a huge impact on environment and society and is ranked second most polluting sector after oil extraction. Fast fashion business model is widespread and is based on the production of low-quality, low-cost garments destined to be thrown away at the end of their short life cycle. However, emerging startups are offering innovative solutions, based on sustainable busi- ness models (SBM) to make the industry more virtuous. These business models cover the three dimensions of the Triple Bottom Line theory and propose long term oriented solutions to create value for stakeholders, including society and nature. Literature analysis showed that sustainable business models classifications already exist, however none of them is specifically related to fashion industry. This thesis aims to fill this gap, by analyzing how startup business models are dealing with sustainability, a classification of sustainable business models has emerged. Startups’ business models are divided in three categories: Slowing down consumption, Impact reduction and Closing the loop. Then the classification has been confronted with literature classifications in order to show contributions, limits and improvements.
