Introduction: Open Innovation (OI) is critical to several industries, driving technological advancement through collaboration. In life sciences, OI presents unique challenges and opportunities compared to sectors such as aerospace and automotive. Digital platforms, considered medical devices in health monitoring applications, are adopting OI to foster user-driven innovation, integrate advanced technologies, improve patient outcomes and streamline delivery. Methodology: The study combined a scoping review, a systematic literature review and a comparative case study analysis. The literature review assessed the general benefits and limitations of OI across industries, with a focus on its application in the life sciences. Semi-structured interviews and content analysis were then used for the empirical part. Results of the literature review: OI accelerates innovation, reduces costs and improves access to external resources across industries. However, life sciences face unique challenges such as regulatory constraints, the complexity of clinical trials, and the need for robust IP management. Despite these challenges, OI can improve drug development, strengthen research collaborations and improve patient outcomes. Risks include IP theft, coordination complexities and quality control issues, highlighting the need for strong governance, clear IP management and effective collaboration strategies. Results of the comparative case study: The case study of the digital platforms Elty and RITA showed effective use of OI involving different stakeholders. Key findings include the importance of ecosystem collaboration, effective IP management and adaptability. OI enabled scalable and flexible solutions, creating robust ecosystems that fostered knowledge sharing and innovation, while effective use of data led to continuous improvement and personalised care. Discussion and conclusion: While OI offers significant benefits such as efficiency and effectiveness, its implementation requires careful planning, robust governance and continuous adaptation. The study highlights the importance of strategic planning, stakeholder management and adaptive governance in maximising the potential of OI, providing valuable insights for practitioners and policy makers.
Introduzione: L’innovazione aperta (OI) è fondamentale per diversi settori, in quanto promuove il progresso tecnologico attraverso la collaborazione. Nella sanità, l’OI presenta sfide e opportunità uniche rispetto a settori come quello aerospaziale e automobilistico. Le piattaforme digitali, considerati dispositivi medici per il monitoraggio della salute, stanno adottando l’OI per promuovere l’innovazione guidata dagli utenti, integrare tecnologie avanzate, migliorare i risultati dei pazienti e semplificare la fornitura. Metodologia: Lo studio ha combinato una scoping review, una revisione sistematica della letteratura e un’analisi comparativa di casi di studio. La revisione della letteratura ha valutato i benefici e i limiti generali dell’OI nei vari settori, con particolare attenzione alla sua applicazione nelle scienze della vita. Per la parte empirica sono state utilizzate interviste semi-strutturate e analisi del contenuto. Risultati della revisione della letteratura: L’OI riduce le tempistiche, i costi e facilita l’accesso alle risorse esterne in tutti i settori industriali. Tuttavia, la sanità deve affrontare sfide uniche, come i vincoli normativi, la complessità degli studi clinici e la necessità di una solida gestione della proprietà intellettuale. Nonostante queste sfide, l’OI può migliorare lo sviluppo dei farmaci, rafforzare le collaborazioni di ricerca e migliorare i risultati per i pazienti. I rischi includono il furto di proprietà intellettuale, le complessità di coordinamento e i problemi di controllo della qualità, evidenziando la necessità di una forte governance e di una chiara gestione della proprietà intellettuale. Risultati dello studio comparativo dei casi: Il caso di studio delle piattaforme digitali Elty e RITA ha mostrato un uso efficace dell’OI che coinvolge diverse parti interessate. I risultati principali includono l’importanza della collaborazione con l’ecosistema, la gestione efficace della proprietà intellettuale e l’adattabilità.
