Art Museum and Library of Nerima ward : a discovery of balance of urban transforming process

Tokyo is a city that energy, renewal, speed, and culture permeate this place. Most of building here are generally designed to use 30 years, so the regeneration and transforming of this city is faster than almost others in the world. The discovery of Tokyo starts from the residential and study area during my stay of 8 months there, in which I had a deep experience of the local life and the transforming comteporary urban and architecture in Tokyo. This lead the final design work. The research starts from the observation of the circumstance of daily life which makes me find the huge contrast in the gentrified process between the demands of large spaces and limited lands. The scale of the city and the lifestyle are totally changed during this transforming. Some important elements of conventional Tokyo are lost. But they are precious for the people live there. So I am trying to find a balance during this transforming process. The site is selected in Nerima ward where is a little bit far from the central 6 wards of Tokyo. This ward mostly consists of local people and few tourist, and can be regarded as a typical conventional place. And the life here is close to most people living and working in Tokyo. The site is close to a TOD station, so the urban transforming process is also proceeding frequently here. The project is a vision initiated by the present of the ward and will be a new art museum and library of Nerima ward. This functional demand of this project is high within a small land offered , so the program is quite complex and the mass of the building is also quite large. The design is trying to open more spaces to freely and easily enter by the people and enhances the accessibility. The goal is to create a place that is friendly for the community. And bring the elements of Tokyo into the design is also the important strategy.

Tokyo è una città in cui energia, rinnovamento, velocità e cultura permeano questo luogo. La maggior parte degli edifici qui è generalmente progettata per durare 30 anni, quindi la rigenerazione e la trasformazione di questa città è più veloce di quasi tutte le altre al mondo. La scoperta di Tokyo parte dall'area residenziale e di studio durante il mio soggiorno di 8 mesi, in cui ho avuto una profonda esperienza della vita locale e della trasformazione urbana e architettonica di Tokyo. Questo ha portato al lavoro di progettazione finale. La ricerca parte dall'osservazione delle circostanze della vita quotidiana, che mi fa scoprire l'enorme contrasto nel processo di gentrificazione tra le esigenze di grandi spazi e terreni limitati. La scala della città e lo stile di vita sono totalmente cambiati durante questa trasformazione. Alcuni elementi importanti della Tokyo tradizionale sono andati persi. Ma sono preziosi per le persone che ci vivono. Sto quindi cercando di trovare un equilibrio in questo processo di trasformazione. Il sito è stato scelto nel distretto di Nerima, un po' lontano dai 6 distretti centrali di Tokyo. Questo rione è composto per lo più da persone del posto e da pochi turisti, e può essere considerato un tipico luogo convenzionale. La vita qui è vicina a quella della maggior parte delle persone che vivono e lavorano a Tokyo. Il sito è vicino a una stazione TOD, quindi il processo di trasformazione urbana procede frequentemente anche qui. Il progetto è una visione avviata dai presenti del rione e sarà un nuovo museo d'arte e una biblioteca del rione di Nerima. La richiesta funzionale di questo progetto è elevata all'interno di un terreno piccolo, quindi il programma è piuttosto complesso e anche la massa dell'edificio è piuttosto grande. Il progetto cerca di aprire più spazi per consentire alle persone di entrare liberamente e facilmente e di migliorare l'accessibilità. L'obiettivo è creare un luogo accogliente per la comunità. Anche l'inserimento degli elementi di Tokyo nel progetto è una strategia importante.
